Join us on Sunday, April 12, at 5pm for the ✨Ithaca Premiere✨ of TEENAGE WASTELAND, a remarkable story of civic courage directed by Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss.

In 1991 in upstate New York, a group of teenage misfits, inspired by a renegade English teacher, embark on a student film project and uncover a vast conspiracy that is poisoning the ground beneath their feet. Banding together to confront the indifferent adults, corrupt politicians, and a violent criminal organization threatening their small town, they produce an investigative documentary that causes shockwaves in their community.

TEENAGE WASTELAND is a coming-of-age story based on exclusive access to hundreds of hours of candid, humorous, and nostalgic video outtakes as well as interviews with educator Fred Isseks and his intrepid students, who revisit the legacy of this transformative experience thirty years later.

The screening will feature a special conversation with the inspiring teacher at the heart of the film Fred Isseks and Alyssa Micha, Senior Creative Producer for WSKG Public Media.

Cosponsored by the Milstein Program in Technology and Humanity and presented in partnership with WSKG Public Media, a PBS Affiliate.

Join PMA for An Evening with Nona Hendryx: A Conversation on Life, Music, and Creative Practice, on Thursday, March 19, from 5:15 pm to 6:30 pm, in the Milstein Auditorium, Milstein Hall. This event is part of the Black Sound Series, organized by Mendi Obadike and Keith Obadike. Co-sponsored by the Department of Performing and Media Arts, Sounds of Blackness, Milstein Program, Department of Music, Feminist, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program, American Studies Program, and the Department of Art.

Legendary artist Nona Hendryx will participate in a public dialogue with faculty members Mendi + Keith Obadike about her six-decade career spanning popular music, art, and technology. Widely known as a founding member of Labelle and the group’s chief songwriter, Hendryx went on to establish herself as an art rocker in the 1980s. In more recent years she has written music for theater and film and collaborated with visual artists like Carrie Mae Weems and Nick Cave. She has also presented multimedia performances at MoogFest and MASS MOCA.

Nona Hendryx: From her Hall of Fame worthy beginnings with Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles to her revolutionary ventures into art-rock, new-wave, and now cutting-edge mixed reality experiences, Nona Hendryx continues to earn her title as music's "Queen of Transformation." With the group LaBelle, Hendryx earned three Gold Albums and a #1 Worldwide Platinum Hit with "Lady Marmalade." Her solo career encompasses nine studio albums and collaborations with Prince, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, George Clinton, and others. In 2024, she premiered "The Dream Machine Experience" at Lincoln Center — an ambitious mixed reality installation combining augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence rooted in Afro-Futurism.

Keyboard Energies — Alternating Currents at the Tata Innovation Center, Cornell Tech.

This concert marked the beginning of CLAVIS, a new collective founded by Federico Ercoli, Patricia García Gil, and Roger Moseley. Bringing together historical keyboards, electric instruments, synthesizers, and new expressive controllers, the performance traced a remarkable continuum of sound across centuries.
It was inspiring to witness such curiosity, experimentation, and collaboration on stage—where Renaissance counterpoint, classical repertoire, and electronic sound worlds met through the shared interface of the keyboard.
A huge thank you to the performers, collaborators, technicians, and everyone who joined us and stayed afterward to explore the instruments.

The energy in the room made it clear: this is only the beginning for CLAVIS. 🎹⚡

What does it look like to merge sustainability, technology, and design? Julia Beitel is showing us through bold projects at Cornell Tech.

Her path began in Cornell’s @milsteinprogram in Technology and Humanity, an enrichment initiative for undergraduate students eager to explore the nexus of liberal arts and emerging technologies through a summer residency at Cornell Tech.

Now pursuing a Master of Science in Design Technology at Cornell Tech, Julia is building projects that blur the line between digital and physical systems — from biomimetic systems and passive wearables to AI-powered gardening tools.

“Both the Milstein and the Design Tech programs have given me such a wide range of experiences that I don’t feel confined to a single discipline or career. Instead, I’m excited by how many directions feel possible," she said.

On Monday, 11/10, at 6pm, we are thrilled to welcome filmmaker Courtney Stephens to Cornell Cinema for a screening of her new film JOHN LILLY AND THE EARTH COINCIDENCE CONTROL OFFICE (2025)! 🐬🧪🌀

JOHN LILLY AND THE EARTH COINCIDENCE CONTROL OFFICE is an essay film about the mysteries of consciousness and communication channeled through neurophysiologist John C. Lilly M.D., a self-described “psychonaut” and daring experimenter who sustained an extraordinary career through uniquely adventurous scientific research with dolphins and psychedelics.

Lilly invented the isolation tank and was a primary explorer in the study of dolphin communication. His experimental projects were staged against the shifting backdrops of 1950s Cold War military science, the drug-infused counterculture of the 60s, and the environmental vanguard of the 70s. Lilly’s motto — “My body is my laboratory” — carried him into realms of radical self-investigation, while his research also helped bring dolphins and whales into the collective dreamlife of the 20th century.

Directed by Courtney Stephens and Michael Almereyda and narrated by Chloë Sevigny, JOHN LILLY AND THE EARTH COINCIDENCE CONTROL OFFICE tells the story of Lilly’s quest, as one historian put it, to “get his hands on the steering wheel of consciousness” — a project that relied increasingly on psychedelics, leaving conventional science behind. The film reflects the scope of Lilly’s interests, the evolution of his public persona, and his interactions with equally exceptional contemporaries, including filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Filmmaker Courtney Stephens will join for a post-screening conversation with Owen Marshall, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Science & Technology Studies. @courtcolt

Free admission! Cosponsored by the Milstein Program in Technology and Humanity and the Department of Science & Technology Studies.

Using an interdisciplinary approach to design a responsive garment, Marcus McDermott ’25 won $500 in the Milstein Program in Technology & Humanity Art+Tech exhibit for his "Bistable Auxetic Body Cuff," last month.

McDermott blended tools from fashion, architecture and computational design, to create the shape-shiting garment that conforms to the human form. The garment also remembers how its wearer moves.

“I am happy to have a platform to do this research and to be mentored by Prof. Baytar,” said McDermott. “Working at the intersection of material science and fashion design is why I chose Cornell.”
