Today’s topic: The gift that was Dolly Parton.

Her musical achievements alone are hard to comprehend (9 Grammys, over 3,000 songs written, 100 million+ records sold, 25 No. 1 country singles, 44 top 10 country albums, the list goes on), but it’s what she did outside of the music world that made her so incredibly special.

Inspired by her father’s illiteracy, she founded the Imagination Library in 1995 which mails free books monthly to children under 5. It now includes all 50 states (and five countries) and has donated more than 300 million books since its inception. Selling 100 million records is a mind-blowing achievement, but gifting 300 million books to children she’d never meet is why the world loved her. And is why it hurts so much to know she’s no longer with us.

Seven years earlier, she promised $500 to 7th and 8th graders in Sevier County, Tennessee (Dolly’s home county) if they graduated high school, in an effort to reduce dropout rates. And it worked: dropout rates in participating classes fell from 35% to 6%.

After the 2016 Gatlinburg/Sevier County wildfires, Dolly created the My People Fund within about two weeks, and gave displaced families $1,000/month for six months, with a $5,000 bonus in the final month. It raised over $9 million in total and helped more than 900 families.

Dolly was famously and deliberately non-partisan her whole life, but she was an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, backed marriage equality early on, and spoke out in support of trans people in her life amid Tennessee’s anti-trans legislation. So I’d say she was pretty progressive, even if she’d never admit it.

“I have some of everybody in my own immediate family and in my circle of employees. I’ve got transgender people. I’ve got gays. I’ve got lesbians. I know and love them all, and I do not judge. They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton. If there’s something to be judged, that is God’s business. But we are all God’s children and how we are is who we are.”

If there’s a heaven, Dolly Parton’s in it.
RIP 🩷
