The joy of creation ✨

For the past two weeks, I’ve felt deeply inspired by life itself. The beauty of nature, the plants, and the little moments of wonder I found everywhere I went. Each of these handpainted notebooks was created from that feeling of inspiration and connection.

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about what happens when the tourists stop coming. Who does this affect, and what can we do about it?

Once again the world is in a precarious state, and I started to think about the very people this would affect.

There were so many people who touched my life as I travelled through this island. They welcomed me with open arms, showed me so much kindness, and outstanding hospitality.

I started to think about the incredible businesses that support and give back to Sri Lanka. So I pulled together a list and published it on my Substack.

That stuck a chord with you. So many of you gave me many more names to add to the list.

I’ve updated the list with your suggestions. So thank you for that and for your continued support for the island.

🗓️ December Programmes

✳️ The Geoffrey Bawa Trust is deeply saddened by the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah, and our thoughts are with the communities affected. We will proceed with our scheduled programmes with care, recognising their role in bringing people together across the many neighbourhoods that shape our city. We hope these engagements may also support broader conversations on how urban planning and design can respond to the ongoing climate crisis.

💝 Dec 7 — December Design Market + Cyclone Relief Donation Drive: Our annual December Design Market collaborates closely with small and medium-sized enterprises to offer a selection of locally-based brands that support Sri Lankan artisans and their communities. All vendors sell independently of the Trust and 100% of profits stay with the businesses.

The market will additionally serve as a collection point for cyclone relief for the Hanthana-based 'The T.E.A. Project', who is currently delivering critical relief to affected families.

🇹🇭 🎤 Dec 9 — Talk: 'Architecture of the Modern Movement in Thailand'. Join Dr. Pirasri Povatong, Thai architectural historian, for an exploration of the legacy and preservation of modern architecture across Thailand.

💬 Dec 11 — Talk: 'Histories from Colonial Fragments in Contemporary Colombo'. Join architectural and urban historian Pamudu Tennakoon for a discussion on how Colombo’s colonial architecture continues to influence negotiations of the city’s history.

🔎 December 14 — Exhibition Tour: 'Ways of Knowing'. Join one of our curatorial team members for a tour that explores the question of how we know what we know.
