Thank you everyone for stopping by to see my artwork yesterday, this time we did it much better. ♥️ @soulofthesouthside This year in 2025 is much better then last year. This time I actually came with my own table, tent, chairs, and actually prints of my personal artworks that I was able to sell yesterday. I still focused on my Sketches and illustrations. Also much love to @dio.mpls for opening the door for me.

UPDATE: This event has been canceled. Another highlight of Twin Cities Art Week: join artist @seitukjones for a talk related to “Art and Artifact: Murals from the Minneapolis Uprising” on view at The Katherine E. Nash Gallery, and presented in association with Memorialize the Movement. Join us in the gallery Wednesday 10/16 4-5pm. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police on the street outside the Cup Foods convenience store at the intersection of 38th Street E. and Chicago Ave. Days of protests and unrest followed. During the uprising, business owners across the Twin Cities began to cover their storefronts with sheets of plywood which were soon turned into powerful messages and murals by artists, protestors, and community. The Cities were in turmoil and the urban landscape was transformed into a living visual chronicle of the moment. During this time, Leesa Kelly founded Memorialize the Movement and began collecting and preserving these murals as businesses took them down. Memorialize the Movement has collected over 1,000 panels of plywood over the last four years and continues to do so today, along with exhibiting these murals for the purpose of keeping George Floyd’s memory and the story of the uprising alive and fresh in people’s minds. The exhibition features a selection of the murals from Memorialize the Movement’s collection. Art and Artifact is the largest gallery exhibition of the murals to be presented since they were created and is Amira McLendon’s curatorial debut. Her goal for the exhibition is to encourage people to reflect on where we are now, as we approach the fifth year since George Floyd’s murder. MTM is proud to announce that through funding from the Minnesota Cultural Heritage Grant, we have been able to hire our first staff member! Please join us in welcoming Amira McLendon, MTM’s first Collections Manager. As you may know, Amira started off as an intern with MTM in 2022 as the Artist Liaison, where she quickly took on other interests within the org. In 2023 she studied abroad in Japan while working remotely with MTM to help plan our 3rd annual Justice for George event. In 2024 she began interning at the Katherine E Nash Gallery, which led to her curatorial debut with Art & Artifacts: Murals From the Minneapolis Uprising. In May Amira graduated from the U of M with a BA in Art, and minor in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies. On September first she was hired on as MTM’s collections manager, tasked with archiving and cataloging the full collection of murals in our stewardship. We know that with Amira on the team these murals will be well cared for! Stay tuned for more exciting updates!! #blackart #blackartists #blackartconservators #collections #artpreservation #minneapolis #minneapolisart
