THE TEENAGE BEDROOM #alltheragetheatre An art installation of a late 90s to early 00s teen girl’s bedroom space that once felt private, messy and sacred. In response to the Epstein files, I wanted to rebuilt one and what started out as an idea became something more exacting. With a small but brilliant team of 3 writers and a designer we talked in depth about those rooms, how spaces like this held a false sense of safety and how girlhood itself was shaped, surveilled and consumed. Every object was sourced with intention and placed with care, not just a nod to nostalgia. The bed, the clutter, the texture all holding a kind of stillness. It became less about recreating a bedroom and more about reconstructing a psychological space. Posters peeling at corners that were cut out straight from the latest Smash Hits magazine and stuck up with sellotape, clothes meant for older girls passed on and handed down, half used make-up inherited yet treasured, diaries tucked away just out of sight with pages filled with careful handwriting and private thoughts never meant to be read. In the room was a CD player playing ‘The First Time’, an audio piece on loop of stories/memories gathered from artists about the first time they experienced the patriarchy and/or were made aware of their body in an adult way. This was offered through headphones to allow for an intimate experience to the material. Audiences entered the space softly, lowering voices. Some didn’t step all the way in at first aware of encroaching something private. It became clear to us the room was being treated as something sacred. A recognition of stepping into something intimate that wasn’t yours but you felt immediately connected to. Thank you to all who came to see the show and stepped into our installation. I am immensely proud of what we all achieved, and couldn’t have done it without the support and belief from the wonderful team behind All The Rage @rlenkiewicz1968 @anoushkawarden @lucymorrison669 @foxanne92 It may have been taken down but the teenage bedroom forever lives in our hearts 💖
