More than food. More than music. A celebration of LEGACY. 🖤🍽️🎶

Six Square was proud to support the inaugural Legacy on a Plate Festival, a celebration of the flavors, traditions, stories, and sounds that connect generations.

Rooted in the rich culinary heritage of the African Diaspora, this experience brought food, music, culture, and community together in a place where so much of Black Austin’s history continues to live.

Because food tells stories. Music carries memories. And culture is something we pass from one generation to the next.

A special thank you to the organizers, participating businesses, artists, and everyone who helped bring this vision to life. We’re excited to see this celebration continue to grow!

This is what celebrating culture and preserving legacy looks like. 🖤 congratulations @burnsidedawn and @carveratxfoundation for an amazing event!

👀 Look what we spotted in Six Square!

Something new is getting ready to pull up in the district. 🖤

Tater Que Express is bringing its food truck to Six Square, and while they’re not open just yet, we couldn’t resist giving them an early welcome.

We love seeing new businesses and new energy becoming part of the district, and we’re looking forward to seeing what Tater Que Express brings to the neighborhood.

📍 Coming soon to Six Square

Stay tuned for opening details, and in the meantime, help us give Tater Que Express a warm welcome to the district! 👏🏾

Six Square is entering a new chapter. Our newly adopted boundary creates a broader footprint for Austin’s Black Cultural District and reflects the growing work to preserve, connect, and strengthen Black Austin’s cultural legacy.

Before we show you where we’re going, here’s where we’ve been. The purple boundary represents Six Square’s previous district footprint and the area many have come to recognize as the heart of the district.

The district now reaches farther. Six Square’s expanded boundary mirrors the State designation and census tract, encompassing IH-35 frontage, the 7th Street corridor to Airport Boulevard, and Manor Road, including the east and west sides of the streets.

Now you can really see the difference. Purple represents the previous boundary. Red represents the expanded boundary.

One district. A broader cultural footprint.

Expansion means more than covering additional ground. It creates opportunities to strengthen connections among the people, businesses, churches, organizations, institutions, historic places, and cultural spaces that are part of Black Austin’s story.

More history to preserve. More culture to celebrate. More community to connect.

This work does not happen in isolation. For nearly two years, Six Square has worked alongside Mend Collaborative and community partners as part of the broader work surrounding Austin’s African American Cultural Heritage District.

That work has helped bring together the AACHD Coalition, a collective of more than 30 nonprofits, neighborhood associations, churches, community organizations, and the Black Chamber.

Because preserving a cultural district takes all of us.

The boundary has expanded, but the mission remains rooted in what has always mattered: preserving Black history, celebrating Black culture, strengthening community, and creating opportunities for Black Austin to continue to live, grow, and thrive.

This is Six Square. And the work continues.

For the past two years, Mend has been supporting Six Square and numerous East Austin-connected organizations and business to develop its capacity to deliver a robust African-American Cultural Heritage District (AACHD) in Austin, Texas. Our belief is that organized community is effective and impactful community. We’re proud to celebrate the significant milestone of the Cooperative Agreement between many organizations that have worked hard to develop it. This Cooperative Agreement is the AACHDs model of transparency, accountability, and cooperation and creates the structure for how these collective organizations can make East Austin the permanent home of Black culture and thriving in Central Texas.

Join us in celebrating this hard-earned achievement by these collective organizations. We’re honored to have supported and continue supporting this important work. 👏

Introducing ART OF SIX SQUARE 🎨

Some stories are written. Others are built piece by piece.

For our first Art of Six Square feature, we’re celebrating artist and educator John Yancey and exploring Rhapsody, the East 11th Street mosaic created by John Yancey with Luis Alicea and Steven B. Jones.

Located at Urdy Plaza on East 11th Street, Rhapsody brings music, movement, culture, and community together through vibrant mosaic art, reflecting the energy and creative spirit of East Austin.

Through this feature, we’re looking closer at Yancey’s creative vision, the history and musical memory that inspired the work, and the stories preserved within each piece of the mosaic.

Swipe through to explore the art, the artist, and the history behind Rhapsody. →

Then tell us: When you look at Rhapsody, what speaks to you? The music, the movement, the history, or the people?

Stories live here.

🌹📸 THEN & NOW: Rosewood

For generations, Rosewood has been more than a place on a map. It has been home.

Rosewood Courts and Rosewood Park became important parts of Black community life in East Austin during an era when segregation shaped where African American families could live, gather, and access public spaces.

But what made Rosewood special wasn’t simply the buildings or the park. It was the people.

It was neighbors becoming family. Children growing up together. Community gatherings, recreation, celebrations, traditions, and generations of memories created right here in East Austin.

Today, the area continues to evolve, but the stories of the families and community that shaped Rosewood remain an essential part of Austin’s history.

Through our Then & Now series, Six Square is preserving more than places. We’re preserving the stories connected to them.

🌹 Then.
✨ Now.
❤️ Forever part of East Austin.

Now we want to hear from YOU.

Did you grow up in Rosewood? Did your family live in Rosewood Courts? Do you remember playing at Rosewood Park or celebrating Juneteenth there?

👇🏾 Share your Rosewood memories in the comments. Your story is part of this history, too.
