My mother visiting from a young democracy India, had the most straightforward response for #OfficerWilson She said that if this armed officer in a car is so easily afraid of unarmed teenagers walking the street, the police ought to quickly retire him. Simple. We are all waking up to a white Thanksgiving and it is telling us of the horrors that a mostly white nation has wreaked on many a colored citizen of the nation. This holiday we must come together and ensure that all present at our tables understand how we cannot be a civil society and have two Americas living in tandem. We need to be one nations. Where what happens to one affects the whole. We must ensure that the least fortunate amongst us are protected by the most fortunate and powerful. A nation that ribs from the poor to make the wealthy richer is not a nation with any moral high ground. A judicial system that frees an armed cop for murdering a teenager out of fear alone is a system that is failed. It is high time that we stop the police from creating new #TrayvonMartin #MichaelBrown and such. Innocents we killed first and then killed again by not giving their deaths a fair trial. Racism is alive. Racism is thriving. Bigotry is sadly thriving in our nation. It takes honest dialog and acceptance of our collective failures for us to grow from divided groups to becoming one people. We can do it. That is the only hope we have for tomorrow. Let us eat around the table with that hope inspiring us to a better place tomorrow.

As it snowed outside and we lamented the failure of the #American #Judicial system yet again for #MichaelBrown and people of #color we are some lunch. Grateful that we have this good luck. That we are able. Sad that in 2014 our nation still has those for whom there is no justice in this life. We must not let more teen age black men die because of the murderous racist fears that white cops like #OfficerWilson have against them. I throw up just a little every time I think of how cavalierly the officer suggested that he saw the demon in the unarmed teenager and that racist old and tired line got him free of having to stand trial. Let us not forget the family in #Ferguson that will not be able to celebrate #Thanksgiving because of gun shots that callously took away their loved one. Let us wish for a new dawn in this nation. New civility. New beginnings.

This shared with me by Jaya Dargan, via Cory Booker makes complete sense. For our nation to dream of someday being post-racist, it has to first grieve and smile as a collective. We cannot be forever divided into a black and white America and expect to be a civil society.

As we ate some beans, cabbage, root vegetable and tomato soup last night we were all sad that #MichaelBrown would never be eating again. That his family and friends will live the rest of their life with a numbing pain. All because a strong and armed #police #OfficerWilson used tired old #racist excuses of fear of #Black men as his reason to have gunned down this teenager. We were finding it hard to swallow our food. We were ashamed of being in the comfort pf our surroundings even as the Brown family lived with a broken heart. And the defeated pain that comes from a nation and #justice system that failed them. How sad that the #GrandJury did not even have the decency to bring the officer to #trial

Thought of #MichaelBrown as we enjoyed this Cornbread. Ashamed that he was taken away from this world because of his #color alone. How sad that #police #OfficerWilson who was armed with a gun had to fear the black #teenager as he would a #demon How sad that such an excuse had the #GrandJury denying the #Brown family an open #trial for the death and #murder of their son. We must not allow another young #Black life to be taken by a #racist cop or a failed system of #justice our nation deserves to do better. As we eat this #holiday weekend, let's also wish for strength for the entire nation. Let's wish that armed police officers do not see fear and the demon in a person of color. Let's hope they think twice before shooting a teenager to death out of plain fear of the other.
