Random Savory Bites

I was doing a great job staying off Instagram until I remembered I had four completely unrelated savory things to share from two wildly different parts of the country. Philly & NYC. I know, my range continues to amaze everyone😜.

@mikesbbq_215 Korean Wings & Brussels Salad: The ribs were sold out by the time I got to order, so I fell back on two things I knew would hit after so many trays I’ve lost count. The Korean wings still nailed that balance between smoke, sweet, and chile heat without losing the chicken underneath, which was pretty succulent. The bigger surprise, even after all these visits, is that I’d still make the Brussels mandatory. Crispy leaves, tender centers, and a pork-fat vinaigrette that gives the dressing this delicious flavor I crave. Hats off to Danny & Jimmy. Those guys clearly know how to give the people what they want (cue the o’jays song) 💪 –highly rec

@royaltavern Hot Dog: Royal Tavern has been turning out some wildly creatively topped hot dogs, but before I listened to the remixes, I wanted to hear the original recording. And by that, I mean just the bun, dog, & mustard. Because, in my opinion, if that trio can’t hold my attention, I’m not sure the toppings are where I want the hot dog to make its case. And this? This was decent, but also something I could’ve recreated at home after a quick supermarket run. Nothing about the bun, dog, or mustard felt distinctive or premium enough to separate it from something I could’ve put together myself. That said, tons of people love the ones with toppings, so I don’t see any reason to argue w/ a huge crowd– do not rec w/ caveat (applies to the plain dog only)

@mitsurunyc Unagi Bowl: Unagi isn’t something I can measure against countless reference points like pastrami or pie, so I’m not going to pretend I’m some aficionado. What I can tell you with confidence is that I really enjoyed this one. The eel was extremely soft, separating under the fork without becoming so delicate that it disappeared into the bowl. The glaze gave the outside a dark, caramelized sweetness, yet the flesh underneath still tasted savory & distinctly of eel rather than becoming little more than a veh

One of those omakase experiences that reminds you how special beautifully prepared fish can be. 🍣✨ @mitsurunyc

At Mitsuru NYC, every course highlighted just how fresh and thoughtfully prepared the fish was, with each bite feeling simple, refined, and incredibly satisfying. A standout for me was the tempura sea bass, perfectly crisp and light.

The experience feels even more special knowing it’s led by Chef Mitsuru Tamura, the former chef of Yasuda. You can feel that level of expertise throughout the meal, not just in the quality of the fish, but in the attention to detail, thoughtful pacing, and exceptional service that makes every guest feel genuinely cared for.

A beautifully executed omakase that balances tradition, precision, and hospitality in all the right ways.
