The photos and installation employ the same energy as the hardcore music that animates the images. An improvisational range of scales and production choices, custom-framed works in dialogue with larger photo-text pieces, creates a dynamic visual field. Installed at varying heights and dimensions, the exhibition guides the viewer’s movement: drawing you in close to catch the expressions of concertgoers, then pulling you back to take in the full force and vibrancy of Maddi’s compositions. The result is an experience that feels both raw, intimate and expansive, attuned to the rhythm and intensity of the scene it documents.

The accompanying zine, imagined and produced by Trevor Clement, is housed in a silk-screened sleeve and combines various media, images, and text, SOLD OUT by the end of the opening!!

“The Hardcore community here has given me so much love and support. This entire experience has been a massive privilege, and I have nothing but gratitude for everyone who has appreciated my work. I hope my work can be a reflection and reminder of the power of community coming together.” — Maddi Jane Brown

TETHERED positions photographer Maddi Jane Brown (@mj.nef) not as a spectator, but as a participant, within the current, not at its edge. Her images hold the blur of motion, the density of low light, the charged stillness before impact. Her works do not smooth the edges; they honor the abrasion. They tether sound and collision into a visual archive of the local hardcore scene built in real time. The exhibition runs through April 15th.

The first act of Subversion: TETHERED by Maddi Jane Brown.

Brown's photographs focus on the underlying connective energy of the hardcore punk community in Syracuse. The subject is treated as a tradition with longevity and emphasizes its meaning to those within - in opposition to the nihilistic and frivolous caricatures of punk from the Sex Pistols onward. Quiet moments juxtapose explosive energy, and tenderness blends with aggression. This work is a celebration of why we have found ourselves here.
