Emily A. Sprague
“Cyano”

-—

This is the fifth solo album by Emily A. Sprague—a synthesizer player, composer, and member of the indie folk band Florist, based around the Catskills, New York.

For the first time, Sprague takes on lead vocal duties, shifting the mood away from her previous, predominantly instrumental solo works. The result feels like a fusion of her traditional solo aesthetic and her songwriting style with Florist. Set around the theme of a fictional planet inhabited by residents attempting to reconstruct their capacity for expressiveness and emotional connection, the album poses questions about the self, others, ecosystems, and life in distant realms. Through the intuitive use of modular synthesizers and voice, it creates a sense where intimacy and distance coexist—as if softly spoken to from a far-off planet.

Ep. 7 Emily Sprague @mlesprg

Emily Sprague is a composer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist best known as the frontwoman and creative force behind Florist. Alongside the band’s intimate, often deeply personal songwriting, Sprague has developed an extensive body of solo work centered around modular synthesis, acoustic instruments, and experimental composition.

Her albums Water Memory, Mount Vision, and Hill, Flower, Fog explore the space between ambient music and more traditional songwriting, often growing out of improvisation and close attention to texture and sound.

Sprague has also brought that experimental approach into her work as a producer and engineer, developing a highly personal relationship with recording technology and the studio itself. Her new album Cyano, coming this fall on RVNG Intl., continues that evolution while placing her voice more prominently within her electronic and ambient work.

EMILY A. SPRAGUE / Cyano (VINYL)
USニューヨーク州の「FLORIST」で活動するEmily A. Spragueのソロ作『Cyano』が2026年にRVNG INTL.

As a songwriter, vocalist and guitarist, @mlesprg can be found fronting the indie folk band Florist, whilst her solo albums explore different shades of synthesised and ambient music. Her latest release, Cyano, is the first time her songwriting and ambient music have shared a space. She has described the record as inhabiting an imaginary sci-fi world: one character in this world is based on the botanist Anna Atkins, who in the mid-1800s began producing photographic prints called cyanotypes – white-on-blue images, a very early form of printed photograph, and the origin of the term ‘blueprint’. We spoke to Emily about Anna Atkins, and the inspiration she provided for the world-building behind Cyano - listen to the full interview and album on the Cantilever app.
