"Feelings" first appeared in the print issue of Isang Mahal no. 4, Hello Barkada's flagship compzine. Reflecting on the issue's theme of realness, MLOU illustrates a situation that I found myself closely relating to. I know those voices written outside and around the central character. I can see who they belong to in my life. I've known those messages since childhood; they are internalized as well as re-experienced IRL when I am around those people.

So, I fully appreciate how the comic also models language I can practice out loud, to connect me with healing, and help protect me from further psychological and emotional harm. And it also reminds me that I am positioned to break this generational curse.

September’s Heat Vision open mic showed up the way it always does at Sunday Jump. Real, unfiltered, and full of heart.

From first-timers finding their voice to familiar faces pushing their craft further, every moment on that stage mattered. Excited to do this all over again for our upcoming mic on Sun, October 4!

For our next mic in October, we’ll be celebrating with performances, good vibes, and of course Filipino American History Month 🇵🇭You definitely won’t want to miss it! Open mic sign ups start at 4:30pm and will be a lottery based system to ensure fair chances for all. 🙌 Show from 5-7pm. Will be streaming on Twitch and YouTube!

💥Our next mic’s focus is Volcanic. Volcanic activity is widely known for being explosive, but it first starts off with an intense heat deep inside the earth melting rock into magma, creating pressure and trapping gasses that ultimately crack the crust and erupts out as lava. Connecting it to our theme, heat rises just as we will rise, like in our own selves, we will break through systemic barriers and bring about change in this world.

Our September 6, 2026 Open Mic may have been the last mic of summer, but we are still bringing the heat! 🔥🎤

Last Sunday (9/6), our focus was “Heat Vision.” Heat Vision invited us to look closer at the warmth, urgency, and possibility already alive within us and our communities. To pay attention to what calls us, and imagine what we’re building together.

Thank you to the musicians, poets, artists, vendors and creators who showed up and shared their stories. The room felt it.

Excited to announce our next open mic will be offering delicious food options by @paru_frances!!

Paru Frances is a queer Filipina chef and artist based in Los Angeles (Tongva Land). Raised between Manila, London, and Chicago, their work centers Filipino culinary intersections, third culture cuisine, and indigenous foodways.

Paru is currently developing “How We Nourish the Moon”, a food zine featuring recipes, art, and interviews with formerly incarcerated youth and LA community members.

Our seasonal theme is Heat Rising. 🔥⬆️
Heat is a powerful form of energy, vital for survival. It is supplied from the sun, the stove for a home-cooked meal, the hugs we give each other, redistributed through touch and connection. It is light, warmth, and care in times of turmoil. It can be found in the fire ignited within ourselves. Fire can burst into chaos, a symbol for uprisings and revolution, but also renewal. It rises and inspires change. It can also burn out and in the aftermath, allow growth and new life to emerge.
