PLANNED FOR DEMOLITION

Wandering through the Van Laere site, I found myself walking through a immense canvas.

Before redevelopment and demolition, the former Van Laere site temporarily became the setting for Planned for Demolition. Its warehouses, offices, corridors, walls and outdoor spaces temporarily became the studio of the international graffiti scene.

A dialogue emerged with the place, where not only spray cans, but also its history and physical surroundings became part of the artistic expressions.

From abstract to realistic, from political statements to pure poetry. Sometimes an explosion of colour, at other times black and white was enough.

No other art form could have brought an abandoned place like this back in the game, reconnecting it to today’s reality, making it relevant, vibrant and truly inspiring.

FÉNY | 18.06.2026

«Από τη νιότη μου χρόνε προδότη, που να ελπίζω και πώς να αφεθώ; Σ αυτή την πόλη που πέφτουμε μόνοι, μόνη μου θα σηκωθώ.»

Those words capture Fény's music.

Her track "Chrone Prodoti" reflects on growing up in a society marked by injustice, alienation and exhaustion. It is about searching for dignity in an indifferent city while refusing to surrender to despair. Deeply personal, yet unmistakably political.

The first time I saw Fény, she was rapping in front of the Greek Parliament at the open mic of Raw Rap Greece. Every line felt honest and real. That defines Feny as an artist.

Walking through Athens, Fény told me how it began. She started writing poems and lyrics as a child. ZN were among the first Greek rap acts she listened to, and by thirteen she was already writing rap. To her, artists with identity and authenticity matter: people who back up their words with actions. Staying true to yourself instead of pretending to be someone else to be liked.

Hip-hop is directly linked to everyday life and naturally addresses social and political issues, as Fény explains.

That commitment is perhaps best captured in "Ypopsies", a track about a society driven by money, manipulation and fear, where people struggle to survive without losing their dignity. Rather than accepting that reality, it calls for awareness, resistance and solidarity.

"Russian Roulette," a collaboration with Jkone and Supreme, honours their friend Andrikos (Antreas Odysseas), an old-skool Greek hip hop artist who was killed in a hit-and-run in August 2021. It also speaks to the Tempe train disaster of 28 February 2023, when 57 people, mostly young students, lost their lives after two trains collided. Since then, Greece has witnessed mass demonstrations demanding justice, and Tempe has become a symbol of state negligence and failed accountability. "Russian Roulette" transforms that collective anger and grief into uncompromising rap.

We ended the afternoon with freddo cappuccinos overlooking the Acropolis, listening to one of her unreleased tracks. Fény turns lived experience, memory and resistance into music that defines her as an artist.

My first night in Athens: straight into the soul of the raw and unfiltered.

Exarcheia. Where protests begin, and police presence is never far away. The neighbourhood of anarchists, communists, working class, the left and resistance. A writer, a true freestyler, guided me through its streets, decoding the tags and pieces covering its walls.

Everywhere, resistance spoke through letters, characters, and paint.

Over the days that followed, I started connecting the dots.

Freddo espressos in Exarcheia. Endless conversations. Bookstores, record stores, walls covered in paint and posters demanding justice. Free Palestine. Save Prosfygika. Antifa. Memorials for young kids Alexis and Berkin. Symbols of resistance. Voices refusing to be silenced.

At Alibi, I met TNT and DJ Gzas again, while behind the decks. Conversations drifted from hip-hop to politics, from the neighbourhood's past to its uncertain future.

At the 12os Pithikos show, that reality exploded off the stage. The energy, the crowd, the lyrics. Political slogans like "ο Παύλος ζει , τσακίστε τους ναζί." This was more than music.

Later, photographer Zissis told me about the early days of Greek graffiti and the impact of the murder of Killah P by a member of the neo-fascist group Golden Dawn in 2013. He explained how everything changed after that moment. Not only for hip-hop, but for an entire generation.

I spent a day walking through Athens with Fény, seeing the city through her eyes, discovering the places that continue to inspire her work. Speaking up about hardship, about fighting back, and about never giving up.

Together with Supreme, conversations moved from old-skool hip-hop to record collecting and foundations of the Greek scene. Somewhere between records and stories, we ended up at Potato King eating fries loaded with nuggets, bacon, pepper sauce and melted cheddar.

On my final night, walking through Exarcheia again, I started recognising names, tags and characters. Artists I had spoken with. Artists I had been following.

This is just the start, more soon.

Big shout out to everyone who shared their stories, knowledge and time. You made this possible. #greekhiphop #greekgraffiti

"Graffiti is a crime"

What fascinates me about Banksy is this tension: anti-establishment, yet impossible to ignore. His work lives on the street, yet reshapes the art world. It’s raw, direct, and accessible: something I often miss in both the traditional art scene and academia.

As a historian, this is why I’m drawn to street art and underground scenes: they reveal what is happening in society. It helps me to connect the present to the past and explain why we are who we are today.

What stood out to me at the exhibition was the re-creation of The Walled Off Hotel. Located on the Palestinian side of the West Bank, directly across from a guarded outpost, it is known as “the room with the worst view,” facing a wall that quite literally divides lives and realities. Inside, works like "Flower Thrower" and the image of an Israeli soldier and a Palestinian freedom fighter in a pillow fight blur the line between conflict and absurdity. It is surreal and political at the same time and forces you to sit with discomfort.

The work "Napalm (Can’t Beat That Feeling)" reimagines the historical image of Kim Phuc (taken during the Vietnam War), where innocence and violence collide with symbols of Western consumer culture and U.S. foreign politics. It’s disturbing, and meant to be. It challenges not only political narratives, but also how we consume images of suffering.

Another recurring theme in Banksy's work is the rat: a symbol of the underclass, but also an ultimate role model: independent, daring, and surviving in the chaos of the city, much like street artists creating work without permission. The rat "Our Time Will Come" carries a powerful message of hope, resistance, and social justice.

Lately, I’ve been exploring the creative scene in Northern Greece, especially Thessaloniki, where history, identity, and community come together through hip-hop, graffiti, and basketball culture, among other things.

I’m planning to spend time in Thessaloniki this year and would love to connect with the local undergroundscene. I’m open to collab or internship. Love to hear from you.

May 10, 2025 my raw, unfiltered introduction to the Greek world in Rotterdam.

Not the postcard version. The real one.
True Greek passion. Brotherhood. Loud conversations. Underground rap and hip-hop. Basketball. Cold coffee & cigarettes. Family over everything. Greek mothers calling their sons every day. Triple spitting to keep away bad energy. Wearing a cross out of respect, tradition, and faith.

I learned that being Greek is pride, chaos, emotion, history, culture, and soul all at once.

One year later, I’m learning the language and diving deeper into the literature, music, art, history, and mindset of Greece.
