As we organise to hit the streets this Saturday 1 August, the Senate Inquiry into the NDIS Bill continues. The second round of public hearings begins tomorrow Thursday 30 July and you can watch live on YouTube at @AUSParliamentLive The program for Thursday’s hearing evidence is now live, but programs have yet to be released for Friday 31 July or Thursday 6 August. Go to our Linktree in our bio and scroll down to rhe heading “Senate Inquiry” to find direct links to the Programs and to the YouTube channel to watch. We are very pleased to see that @mob4mobqld and @fpdn_australia will be giving evidence at 2:30pm AEST Thursday 30 July to speak to the serious harmful impact the NDIS Bill will have on First Nations communities. Don’t miss this session tomorrow! We have until 14 August to force the Liberals, Nationals and Independent Senators to change their vote and SCRAP THE BILL! You can get involved by turning up on Saturday 1 August, or if you can’t attend protests, making phone calls or sending emails telling politicians just how harmful the NDIS Bill is. They are a proudly Disabled Lebanese Non-Binary Dyke based in Magan-djin. Oriela has lived experience as an NDIS participant themselves, with high physical disability and psychosocial support needs; being a full time power wheelchair user, daily caregivers and is living in Specialist Disability Accommodation/Supported Independent Living environment (SDA/SIL). As well as being a dedicated community organiser and activist; Oriela is a passionate disability justice advocate, lived/living experience peer worker and trained Alt2su facilitator with a focus on anti-carceral, peer-lead and trauma-informed responses to distress. INTRODUCING ROWENA SPECHT-WHYTE - FACILITATOR Rowena Specht-Whyte (she/her) is an NDIS participant with multiple permanent invisible disabilities, both physical and psychosocial, and is a queer cis woman whose sole income is the Disability Support Pension. Rowena is a strong disability justice advocate with a Masters in Communication for Social Change, as well as a writer and singer/songwriter. She is one of the originators of the Protect Our NDIS Alliance and is a national organiser as well as part of the Magan-djin team. INTRODUCING BRIANNA BELL Brianna Bell is a disabled woman, lawyer, and NDIS participant from Meanjin/Brisbane. She’s worked part-time in QAI’s NDIS Appeals service since 2022, providing advocacy and legal advice to people appealing NDIS decisions at the Tribunal, as well as contributing to systemic analysis and advocacy about the legal, policy, and practical issues in the NDIS. As a wheelchair user and assistance dog handler with complex physical, neurological, cognitive, and sensory impairments, she’s also experienced firsthand the harm caused by systems that assume a ‘common-sense approach’ will prevent flawed rules from producing bad results. 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁! Cassie spoke to the United Nations about our Living Letters project, reflections from some of the people who the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was written for. Stories from First Nations people of violence, trauma, exclusion, and disconnection from culture. Systems that fail to see them has whole people. 20 years on from the CRPD, many of its rights have not yet been made real. When equality is denied - harm grows. She called out governments for their lack of action on the Disability Royal Commission (DRC). The DRC made 222 recommendations for change. More than 2 years on and less than 12 have been completed. Calling out Queensland specifically as the only state not to take a clear position on ending solitary confinement for children in detention. Now with cuts to the NDIS, thousands more people with disability will be placed at risk. People need community and connection. They need the rights in the CRPD to become their reality. Alex used his time speaking at the United Nations to call on all governments, Australian and global, to end the use of solitary confinement in detention. He calls out the disproportionately high rates of detention of people with disability in Australia and the compounding impacts solitary confinement has, especially on young people and First Nations people with disability. Following the Disability Royal Commission (DRC) only 2 states/territories have agreed to a full prohibition on solitary confinement. He also noted Australia's failure to implement a national Human Rights Act, failing our own legal obligations under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
