Only a half-mile to this view.

And with just ~150 feet of gradual elevation gain, getting to Sunset Rock in Keene, New Hampshire, is a lot easier than the view might suggest.

The trail climbs through the woods before opening onto a rocky ledge overlooking Keene and the Monadnock Valley.

I went on a cloudy afternoon when the forecast had promised a little more sky. While the clouds never really broke, the view was still worth the short hike.

👉 Save this one for an easy New Hampshire fall hike with a big view, and send it to someone who’d go with you.

Here’s What to Know:

- Park: There’s a small dirt pull off on Chapman Road in Keene across from 412. This is the best spot for the 1.0 mile out-and-back hike.

- Getting there: From the metal gate, walk around it and follow the paved road uphill. After the water tower on your right, the paved road splits — go straight onto the dirt path through the woods. Continuing left on the paved road is not the direct route to Sunset Rock. Keep Gmaps open and simply follow your blue marker up....

- Difficulty: Easy. There’s only about 150 feet of gradual elevation gain, and the woods path to Sunset Rock is a leisurely hike.

- At the overlook: Sunset Rock is a rocky ledge, so wear hiking shoes with good grip. The surface is bumpy and uneven, but there’s no scrambling or climbing onto rocks required — the ledge is essentially level with the surrounding ground. Take care around the edges and uneven rock formations.

- Distance: Only a half-mile to the overlook. Suitable for young kids and almost all levels.

- Your 🐕 on leash is welcome.
- No porta potty onsite.
