If you’re in Bakersfield and want a lunch you’ll actually think about later — here’s your list.

🍔 Moo Creamery — fresh baked buns, hand cut fries, and a new downtown space that makes it even better than before. The lunch crowd is always there for a reason.

🥗 Locale Farm to Table — locally sourced, rotating menu that actually changes. Never the same thing twice and always good. Their staples are always a hit and I’m getting the Cowboy Tacos

🍕 Centro Cali Brewing — scratch kitchen downtown with a craft beer list if the day allows it. The pizza keeps me coming back but everything on the menu is solid.

🌮 Luna Bistro and Cafe — hard to put in a box which is exactly why I love it. Unique menu, great coffee, right downtown on H Street. I love their enchiladas!!

🍝 Luigi’s — a Bakersfield classic that’s been here forever for a reason. When nothing else sounds as good, this one always delivers. Either mini salad and pasta or splitting the steak. Can’t leave without butter finger pie

🐟 Killer [Pike/Poke] — fresh, customizable, and my go-to when I want something lighter that still feels like a real meal. Only place I trust to get poke in town and it’s so good

And if you want to eat clean without doing any of the work — Modern Grub deserves an honorary mention every single time. Fully gluten free, freshly prepped, and they deliver.

I'm awkwardly smiling because you genuinely don't realize how bad it was until you say it out loud...

Chelsey of @modern_grub broke down what's actually happening inside your body when you're eating in a deficit, and it stopped me in my tracks.

At my lowest I wasn't just physically small. I was mentally at rock bottom, deep in an eating disorder, convinced that a handful of Cheez-Its a day meant I was winning. I wasn't. I was falling apart on the inside while everyone told me I looked great.

That's the whole reason The Girl in the Mirror exists. I'm having the conversations I wish someone had with me before it got that bad and learning how to fuel my body the right way while still reaching my goals and feeling comfortable in my body for maybe, honestly, the first time ever..

I'll go first. I was 12. Twelve. A child. Counting points on a napkin at a middle school lunch table.

Meet Chelsey Hall, co-owner and Head of Kitchen at @modern_grub, a family run fresh food spot in Bakersfield built on "real, fresh, clean." Three generations of women running the place, and the kind of person you actually want answering your questions about food.

I sat down with her because I've spent most of my life treating my body like a math problem. Skipping meals. Calling it discipline. Feeling proud of how little I could survive on. And every single time I wondered why I couldn't sustain it.

Turns out my body was just doing its job and I was the one fighting it.

This is the first clip from our full interview for The Girl in the Mirror, my self love series where I'm asking real experts the questions I've been too scared to ask out loud.

Their open kitchen concept, stylish decor, and inviting patio instantly set the tone. We kicked off with a cucumber margarita, fresh lemonade, and a smoky craft cocktail called The Yellow — all juices are pressed in-house and you can absolutely taste the difference.
