Pantha Du Prince’s Mother Drum, remixed by Sebastian Mullaert, has an innately relaxed and restrained quality that’s difficult to pin down.

Much of it comes from the looseness of the rhythm, particularly the little stab that sits just slightly behind the beat. It reminds me of the difference between leaning forward on a motorbike, pursuing the road with purpose, and sitting back in Easy Rider mode, simply cruising through the landscape and giving it permission to unfold.

It immediately transported me back to the long sunrise sets I’ve played over the years, particularly at Burning Man, when the flamboyance of the night has disappeared and people are moving almost imperceptibly, eyes closed, simply inhabiting the music.

One of five records reviewed fully in The Space In-Between // EP03, my monthly Substack series exploring music that falls between the usual genre definitions.

Out today, the fourth release from Pink Preludes is dedicated to my dear friend Patrick Dunne of New Orleans—someone whose friendship, mentorship, and intellectual curiosity have shaped my life in enormous ways.

The subtitle (Madeleine) references the famous passage from Marcel Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past, where the taste of a simple cake unexpectedly unlocks a vivid childhood memory. Patrick gifted me a special copy of the novel years ago.

Prelude in E Minor begins quietly before gradually unfolding into a warm and reflective atmosphere in G Major — a full submersion into a moment from the past. The piece is less about nostalgia than what Proust called “involuntary memory”: the way an ordinary sensory experience can suddenly surface something long forgotten. The music returns to its opening minor motif, bringing us back to the present. The glass is empty.

Small Isles, “Everything on Memory” is out now on Modern Recordings/BMG.

These songs were Written and Recorded in collaboration with Jacob Snider.
Without the tremendous contributions of these people, the music would be diminished:
@temmescott who sang beautifully.
@lcandrade @ritabel and @siepeck whose string performances are sublime.
@keithmkarman who added some magnificent bass.
@mcresswelian who mixed, mastered and generally elevated this collection.

@andypetrmusic and @bokeh_lens also both contributed their engineering superpowers.

@libby.mckay generously helped me with the cover.

Thank you to @meiler.brian , @juniorcitizen and @kate.hyman1 for your support. And everyone at @bmg.synch.us

And to Sarah Avrin @charmschoolmedia

To Christian Kellersman and Joe Morgan Davies at Modern, your belief in this project has been crucial to its progress. I am proud to be the final artist releasing music on Modern Recordings.

This music is meant to provide a point of departure for the listener. Eyes closed, drifting away.

Much love to those who do.
