Keep trying: When we were in New York we saw this beautiful woman in red in the window of a butcher shop. It was just dusk and the lights were glowing inside and her dress really contrasted with the light green walls. There were old black and white family photos in the window next to sausages and handwritten notes for cuts of meat were on the front door. I couldn’t wait to paint the scene. @moethebutcher
I entered this painting at the San Diego Watercolor Society @thesdws and two times it did not get in. I took it home and asked a few of my trusted art friends what they would do differently and got several different ideas. I mulled them all over and went with brightening the green walls and cropping. The original had more of a symmetry like a still from a Wes Anderson movie. I LOVE symmetry but it wasn’t drawing your eye to the woman as much as I wanted so the crop made sense. And the brighter green made her red dress pop a bit more. So I resubmitted. This time it was accepted but only as an alternate. Meaning that if a painting sold it would be hung with the show. It did not get hung. So I did not give up. I tried once again and I am happy to say this month it will be on display at Liberty Station @thesdws thank you to Stephanie Goldman, the judge. @goldmanfineart
Not all painting are for all people but this one is one of my favorites because it brings me back to that summer night wandering through New York as the street lights were coming on.
