Evoking worlds that follow entirely different rules, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass enchanted generations of readers and inspired artists for well over a century. Carroll, and through him Alice, takes us to an unknown but wonderful yet bewildering place. In a dreamlike state, Alice meets the mysterious Wonderland characters, all well anchored in the collective cultural memory such as the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledee and Tweedledum…..Brilliant storyteller Alexei Ratmansky shows his view on these fantastical stories, performed and brought to life by the incredible Dancers of Hamburg Ballet.
There is something so intriguing and highly theatrical to me, imagining this world, accessing another realm of reality. I decided on an approach that is quite abstract, yet highly colourful―one that leaves space for imagination and, of course, for the dance itself and the beauty of moving bodies in space.
We chose a different setting for each Act of the venues she encounters in one single journey at a time. Elements that grow and shrink, perspectives that shift, worlds upside down…. It has been a huge pleasure and a great joint effort to bring this creation to the stage of Staatsoper Hamburg, all the different artistic disciplines and artists and technicians coming together to create a singular experience that speaks on so many levels. Thank you all for this journey through Wunderland.

And home we steer, a merry crew,
Beneath the setting sun.

Yesterday we celebrated the magical world premiere of WONDERLAND, and with it the festive opening of our 51st Hamburg Ballet Days.

Warm congratulations to our dancers and everyone involved behind the scenes who made this evening possible! And a big thank you to Alexei Ratmansky and his entire artistic team, who brought this Wonderland to life on stage!

Gestern haben wir die magische Uraufführung von WUNDERLAND gefeiert und damit die festliche Eröffnung unserer 51. Hamburger Ballett-Tage.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch an unsere Tänzer:innen sowie alle, die hinter den Kulissen an diesem Abend mitgewirkt haben! Und ein großes Dankeschön an Alexei Ratmansky und sein gesamtes künstlerisches Team, die das Wunderland auf der Bühne zum Leben erweckt haben!

The best learning happens when dancers feel challenged and supported at the same time.

Here, quick relevés and jumps with resistance develop coordination, endurance, articulation, and awareness.

But the goal is never just stronger feet.

The goal is confident, intelligent dancers who understand their own bodies and can adapt to the demands of today's choreography.

Serious work.

Joyfully done.
