It’s not natural for a being to abandon his house or tribe 🇮🇪☘️ Caithfear filleadh ar thobar na Gaeltachta 🌍 We must return to the wellspring of the Gaeltacht.

I learned this poem in school around age 14. It means something very very different to me now.

Entering my teens, I convinced my parents to let me attend a school in the Gaeltacht where my grand parents live & where my mom + Sayers side of the family grew up. For anyone unfamiliar with the Gaeltacht, it’s the name for Ireland’s traditionally Irish-speaking regions, where communities continue to live through the language.

This poem, Fill Arís, means “Return Again”. Seán Ó Ríordáin brings us to Dún Chaoin in West Kerry, which you’ll see in this video, and asks what we might discover about ourselves by returning to Irish.

There’s a history behind that invitation. Colonial rule, famine and emigration disrupted the passing of Irish between generations. Across Irish America, family stories, music and traditions have sustained a connection to Ireland, often without the language being passed down alongside them. Today, people on both sides of the Atlantic are choosing to learn and reclaim Irish, while Irish-speaking communities continue working to secure its future.

I’ve arranged to live in the Gaeltacht for a while next year to improve my blas, the accent and rhythm of my spoken Irish. Even after years there, I have plenty more to learn…

I made this video to share something I didn’t understand when I first learned the poem: how returning to a language can deepen your understanding of yourself, your history and the people you belong to.

“Your true mind and your true shape.”

If Irish wasn’t passed down in your family, you can still begin that connection ☘️
