Jeff Sparrow's latest book Somewhere Here the Future’s Hid is a biography of little known Australian writer Lesbia Harford. But Lesbia was an influential Australian poet, political activist and queer icon. Her books are now available as Text Classics.⁠

Largely unknown during her lifetime, Lesbia Harford (1891–1927) is a major figure in Australian letters. Writing during the Great War, Harford celebrated same-sex desire with a boldness rare for her era. She melded radical politics with modernist sensibility – in both form and content, she was decades ahead of her time.⁠

Born with a congenital heart defect that ensured early death, she lived with passion and commitment. She qualified as a lawyer when the profession was almost entirely closed to women and debated Robert Menzies about the war. After abandoning university to work in a clothing factory, she became a union leader and joined the Industrial Workers of the World. She moved among significant literary and political figures – Katharine Susannah Prichard, Vance and Nettie Palmer, John Curtin, John Cain – and with her husband, painter Pat Harford, influenced post-impressionist art in Australia.⁠

Harford’s deeply personal writing often requires biographical context. Yet despite growing interest in her work, no definitive account of her life exists. Award-winning writer Jeff Sparrow draws on years of archival research and brings to light new information about Lesbia’s work, life and romantic relationships. He sets Harford’s writing and life against the Great War and the tumultuous events that created modern Australia, showing how and why one of Australia’s best artists is still relevant a century after her death – and what her story has to show us about art, politics and the value of hope amid a time of global upheaval.⁠

It’s not easy to talk about racism.

Especially if you encountered it as a child.

So all I’m saying, as an Australian and a third culture kid, of Sri Lankan background- who loved both her cultures, is that we can do better and need to do better for the sake of our nation and it’s children.

Belonging is important for all of us.

💡Challenging Anzac: Stories that Don’t Fit the Legend

The ANZAC legend has shaped Australia’s national identity for more than a century. Yet many experiences of war do not fit within it.

In our next Making Public Histories webinar (November 19), three leading historians explore some of these stories: Aboriginal activists, deserters on the Western Front, veterans who took their own lives, and soldiers who became radicalised by their service. They will discuss how episodes in Australia’s war history that unsettled the Anzac legend – from the relief of Tobruk, nuclear testing on Australian soil and feminist protests against war, to alleged atrocities in Afghanistan – have been elided or adapted to ‘fit’ the legend.

Our panelists Mia Martin Hobbs, Carolyn Holbrook and Joan Beaumont are the editors of the newly published Challenging Anzac: Stories that don’t fit the legend (New South Publishing). The webinar will be chaired by Emeritus Professor of History, Monash University, Alistair Thompson and is entirely free!
