Sand Dune Gecko (Stenodactylus sp.)

A tiny explorer of the dunes.

The Sand Dune Gecko is perfectly adapted to life on shifting desert sands. Its pale coloration, large eyes, and slender toes help it move effortlessly across the dunes under the cover of darkness, where it hunts insects and other small invertebrates.
Despite its tiny size, it has an inquisitive personality.

This little gecko paused just long enough to look directly into the lens before disappearing back into the night.

Encounters like these are a reminder that some of the desert's most remarkable wildlife is also the easiest to overlook.

وزغ الكثبان الرملية (Stenodactylus sp.)

مستكشفٌ صغير للكثبان الرملية.

يُعد وزغ الكثبان الرملية من الزواحف المتكيفة مع الحياة في الصحراء، حيث تساعده ألوانه الرملية، وعيناه الكبيرتان، وأصابعه الرفيعة على الحركة بسهولة فوق الرمال الناعمة ليلًا أثناء بحثه عن الحشرات واللافقاريات الصغيرة.

ورغم صغر حجمه، يتميز بفضوله اللافت. توقف هذا الوزغ للحظات ونظر مباشرة إلى العدسة قبل أن يختفي سريعًا بين الكثبان. مثل هذه اللقاءات تذكرني بأن أجمل كنوز الصحراء غالبًا ما تكون الأصغر حجمًا والأكثر خفاءً.

Horned Viper

Hidden in plain sight.

Perfectly adapted to life in the desert, the Saharan Horned Viper relies on exceptional camouflage to remain almost invisible against the sand. Its heavily keeled scales, cryptic coloration, and patient ambush strategy make it one of the UAE's most remarkable desert predators.

This image marks my first herping experience. Photographing these tiny desert creatures with a 100mm macro lens during the peak of summer was both challenging and rewarding, revealing a fascinating side of the desert that often goes unnoticed. My herping buddy throughout this adventure was @majbahmishu

تُعد أفعى الرمال المقرنة من أكثر الكائنات تكيفًا مع البيئة الصحراوية، إذ تعتمد على تمويهها الاستثنائي لتندمج مع الرمال وتصبح شبه غير مرئية وتساعدها حراشفها الخشنة ولونها المتناسق مع البيئة على البقاء مختبئة في انتظار فريستها.

تمثل هذه الصورة أول تجربة لي في الهرپينغ (Herping). كان تصوير الكائنات الصحراوية الصغيرة بعدسة 100mm Macro خلال حرارة الصيف تحديًا ممتعًا كشف لي جانبًا خفيًا من الحياة البرية في الصحراء. وكان رفيقي في هذه الرحلة @majbahmishu

The scrubland stirs as a mother leads her cubs into the sun-drenched wild. With oversized paws and boundless curiosity, they turn the clearing into a classroom, learning the silent language of the hunt.

Under her watchful, amber gaze, the forest ceases to be a challenge and becomes an inheritance. These are the apprentices of the wild, claiming their place in the landscape that was once again their own.

Almost invisible beneath the sand, the Saharan Horned Viper is a master of camouflage. Its sandy coloration and heavily keeled scales allow it to blend perfectly with its surroundings, making it one of the desert's most elusive predators.

This image marks my first herping experience. Photographing tiny desert creatures with a 100mm macro lens in the peak of summer was both challenging and rewarding, opening the door to a fascinating hidden world of desert wildlife. My herping buddy during this adventure was @majbahmishu .

The desert's perfect illusion.
Almost invisible beneath the sand, this is a master of camouflage. Its intricate patterns blend seamlessly with the desert floor, making it one of the most challenging reptiles to spot in its natural habitat.

This image marks my first herping experience, and I'm truly grateful to my herping buddy, Mr. @majbahmishu , for his guidance and support. Photographing tiny desert creatures with a 100mm macro lens in the peak of summer was challenging, but discovering this hidden world made every moment worthwhile.

A special thanks as well to the talented macro wildlife photographers and inspiring creators I follow on Instagram. Your work encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and explore a completely new side of wildlife photography.

تُعد هذه الأفعى الصحراوية من أمهر الكائنات في التمويه حيث تمتزج نقوشها وألوانها مع الرمال لتصبح شبه غير مرئية في بيئتها الطبيعية.

تمثل هذه الصورة أول تجربة لي في (Herping)، وأتوجه بالشكر لصديقي @majbahmishu على دعمه وإرشاده طوال الرحلة. ورغم حرارة الصيف وصعوبة تصوير الكائنات الصحراوية الصغيرة بعدسة 100mm Macro، كانت التجربة مليئة بالاكتشافات التي فتحت لي بابًا جديدًا في تصوير الحياة الفطرية.

The leopard is neither the king nor the fastest but he is the ghost and invisible. He doesn't hunt in packs like the lions, hyena or wild dogs, he hunts precisely alone in the dark. He is the survivor of the shadows.

Little Owl (Athene noctua)

The moment silence turns into flight.

For a brief second, the desert stood still.. then this Little Owl launched effortlessly into the air. Its wings spread wide, its eyes locked onto the world below and its shadow raced across the sand beneath it.

Little Owl may be small, but he/ she is fearless hunters. Their quick reflexes and agile flight allow them to catch insects, reptiles and small mammals with remarkable precision, making them one of the desert's most efficient predators.

Capturing a moment like this takes patience, timing and a little luck.. but it's these split-second encounters that make wildlife photography so rewarding.

البومة الصغيرة (Athene noctua)

اللحظة التي يتحول فيها السكون إلى طيران.

لثوانٍ معدودة، بدت الصحراء ساكنة… ثم انطلقت البومة الصغيرة بجناحيها في حركة خاطفة. عيناها تراقبان كل ما حولها بينما يرسم ظلها على الرمال مشهدًا لا يتكرر إلا في لحظات عابرة.

ورغم صغر حجمها، تُعد البومة الصغيرة من أمهر الصيادين في البيئة الصحراوية، إذ تعتمد على سرعة رد الفعل وخفة الحركة لاصطياد الحشرات والزواحف والثدييات الصغيرة بدقة مذهلة.

مثل هذه اللحظات تحتاج إلى الصبر، والتوقيت المثالي، وقليل من الحظ… وهي ما يجعل تصوير الحياة البرية تجربة لا تُنسى.

Indian Roller (Coracias benghalensis)
A splash of blue in a sea of gold.
Perched quietly on a sunlit rock, this Indian Roller brought a burst of color to the dry grasslands. While it may appear calm, it is always alert, scanning the ground for insects, lizards, and other small prey before launching into a swift and precise hunt.

Known for its breathtaking aerial displays during the breeding season, the Indian Roller is a symbol of beauty, agility and resilience across the Indian subcontinent.

Sometimes, the most striking colors appear where you least expect them.

📍 Panna Tiger Reserve, India 🇮🇳

طائر الرولر الهندي (Coracias benghalensis)

بقعة زرقاء وسط بحرٍ من الذهب.

وقف الرولر الهندي بهدوء فوق صخرة في قلب السهول الجافة، ليكسر بألوانه الزاهية دفء المشهد. ورغم هدوئه الظاهر، فإنه يبقى في حالة ترقب دائمة، يراقب الأرض بحثًا عن الحشرات والسحالي وفرائسه الصغيرة قبل أن ينقض عليها بسرعة ودقة.

يشتهر هذا الطائر بعروضه الجوية المذهلة خلال موسم التكاثر، ويُعد رمزًا للجمال والرشاقة في شبه القارة الهندية.

أحيانًا، أجمل الألوان تظهر في أكثر الأماكن هدوءًا.
