Ever Distant (Yao Yao) by Monika Kuo

My name is Monica Kuo — a filmmaker, producer, and creative director from Taiwan based in London. I have just completed my MA in Fashion, Film, and Digital Production at LCF. The styles of my films are quite diverse, often exploring ideas of identity, belonging, and beyond.

My graduate project is a hypothetical fashion film that examines whether technology and fashion can merge into an “emotional interface,” and how the evolution of communication methods shapes the emotional landscape of Gen Z.

Ever Distant (Yao Yao) synopsis:
Far from home, Yao Yao studies abroad in London, drifting through the city’s cold and lonely streets. Her only companion is a piece of Techwear from her homeland—plain to the eye, yet pulsing with hidden warmth. Through light, touch, and fleeting whispers of heat, it carries her longing across time and distance, stitching together the fragile bond between herself and the family she yearns for.

Emile Braibant presents a collection rooted in personal history and classical Japanese theatre. Drawing from his grandmother’s work as a kabuki actor in the 1960s, the pieces reinterpret traditional kabuki characters through contemporary craftsmanship. Each garment reflects a role she once played, including Yuki-Onna, a woman made of snow, and Kiyohime, who transforms into a serpent out of betrayal. The collection features hand-pleated silk organza panels embroidered with vintage Swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls, with over 25,000 beads stitched by hand, 8,500 of them on the Yuki-Onna dress alone.

The Yuki-Onna dress created by 30 meters of hand pleated silk organza embroidered with over 8000 vintage @swarovski crystals and 200 freshwater pearls, then draped and hand sewn to a corset.
