A few snippets from yesterday’s lifecasting session on my friend and collaborator @beephlis as part of a mentoring session for @helenflemingcreative.

We did an “old school” plaster back, alginate front type process, with a couple of tweaks:

1) The backs of the ears were filled with a small batch of dental alginate first and bonded into the back half of the cast. This helped preserve the shape of the ear and eased removal.

2) The nose was done first using a small batch of unretarded alginate, to ensure breathing pathways were totally clear, this was dabbed with cotton wool to ensure it bonded mechanically with the main batch of alginate.

The alginate used was Cavex Cream (a dental product) which was retarded into a 6-ish minute set using a mix of room temperature water and retarder (TSP) dissolved into the water.

It’s a bit (or a lot!) of a hack, but if you look at the consistency of the product in application, it’s taking me to the wonderful memories and performance of the much missed Pink House Algiform or old-formula Accucast 880.

You have to agree we got a great end result, and even got a @monsterclayusa pull and a @jesmonite_ltd AC100 pull from the same alginate negative! 🙌

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good 🤫
Been busy making custom Master Patterns, Negative, Positive, and Matrix Moulds for sculpting bases for my personal use as well as for @batcatfx. I may not have Marauder’s Map, but do believe I will manage some Mischief 🪄
•
@smoothon for the Moulds, Shells, and Positives
@monstermakersus @monsterclayusa was also used in the process

We always thoroughly enjoy the behind the scenes of workshops and processes so here is some of the Thora-IQ design process! The Thora-IQ is a medical simulation product that is used to practice needle decompression and chest drain procedures.

Life casting, sculpting, moulding, fibreglassing, 3D/CAD work are just some of the processes used for this product. This all helped us to balance the realism with the function and importantly, cost!

Designing this product was a lot of fun but as with any good project there was also a lot of problem-solving! These snippets do not include all the design drawings, prototypes, tests and changes! Maybe we should film them during the next one?
