Had to get a photo with my friend Dr. Daniel Jean before this morning's commencement exercises at the Prudential Center. A fellow Montclair alumnus, Dr. Jean is a mentor and visionary for education and success. His leadership as part of Montclair's amazing EOF program is an example of the value and impact these programs have on our communities.

🔹 #RoleModelsToTheCommunity 🤝
🔹Earlier this week, Brothers Janiel, Adrian, and Angel had the pleasure of hosting the Upward Bound Project from Montclair State University for a campus visit and a conversation about student leadership, campus involvement, and the Honors College 🔥

🔹As members of the Honors College, Janiel and Adrian shared their personal experiences and insights about academic life, leadership opportunities, and the value of community on campus.

🔹The Montclair Upward Bound Program supports high school students from Paterson, NJ, helping them prepare for college through academic enrichment, mentorship, and leadership development.

🔹This visit reflects our chapter’s ongoing dedication to our Reaching Every Kid Mentorship Initiative, which aims to empower and inspire the next generation of scholars and leaders through engagement, guidance, and brotherhood 💪📈

🍦Interviews can be anxiety-inducing experiences, to say the least. The vanilla plug-in air freshener was just one of several attempts I made to create a more relaxed atmosphere during my in-person interviews.

😵‍💫So when Simone, a first-generation college graduate and EOF program alumna, sat across from me for a job interview just a few years removed from nearly dropping out - there was little vanilla could do to ease her.

⌛️By the end of the hour, we'd both laughed and cried, and I was exhausted the rest of the day. Since that day, whenever I plug in a vanilla air freshener, I don't feel relaxed - I feel MOTIVATED - because I remember Simone's story of overcoming the odds.

🎙Now Available on YouTube🎙

"The Urgency of Mentorship," my talk from TEDxMontclair, shares the story of Simone, the only one of the more than 40,000 candidates I've interviewed in my 20-year HR career, to bring me to tears.

In this 15-minute TEDx Talk, I explore:
➡️ Simone's story, from nearly dropping out of college after initial struggles to becoming a first generation college graduate who mentors others.
➡️ The impact mentors and mentorship has on individuals and communities, and "The Mentorship Multiplier" effect that builds highways of economic mobility.
➡️ The critical importance of programs such as TRIO and EOF for empowering individuals from historically marginalized and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and bridging "The Mentorship Gap."

This is truly an "idea worth spreading," and I am grateful to @tedxmontclair and @tedx_official for the forum to call you all to action - and to realize The Urgency of Mentorship.

🕵️‍♀️🔬 What do insects have to do with solving crimes?

Today at Montclair State University, high school students from the Upward Bound program joined us for a hands-on workshop in forensic entomology — the study of how insects can help crack real-life mysteries. 🪰🦗

Led by Professor Scott Kight and graduate research student Sabrina Galloza, this interactive session explored insect behavior, scientific observation, and how STEM connects to real-world problem solving. Students got to observe live insect specimens and learn how scientists use bugs to understand timelines in forensic investigations.

We are proud to support Upward Bound’s mission to open doors to college — and we are especially excited to show students the many exciting pathways in STEM education and teaching! @montclair_upwardbound 👩🏽‍🔬📚💡

Students observe and take photos. Laboratory tools and insect study materials are visible on the table.

The NJFCU Business Development and Community Outreach team had the pleasure of hosting several financial literacy courses for the students of Montclair State's Upward Bound Program. After completing the sessions, NJFCU presented each student with a certification in financial literacy to recognize their hard work and enthusiasm for learning financial skills.

Aliyah Copper, Dhana Reynoso Miele, and Melanie Herrera had a wonderful time with these students and would like to express gratitude for welcoming us as part of the Upward Bound Program 2024!

Over the past month, we hosted two step workshops, one with the sisters of Chi Omega and another with the students of Upward Bound! Before diving into stepping, we took time to honor and share the rich history and cultural significance of stepping.

A special thank you to Chi Omega and Upward Bound for stepping with us and for learning about the history and legacy behind stepping! We want to give a shoutout to the students of Upward Bound, who traveled all the way from Paterson, NJ, to the University of Delaware to tour our campus. We hope we left you with an unforgettable UD experience! 🙌🏽

Finally, a big shoutout to our chapter brother, Landy Garcia (SP’23), for leading these incredible workshops! 👏🏽

I wrote this book 9 years ago and I’ve been asked to speak on it multiple times every single year.
.
It’s primarily for 1st generation college students and those that are excited, but a little anxious about going to college. Today I’m in Wisconsin speaking about it and I can’t wait until this group gets here.
.
Would you like to learn more about this book? Get get a copy for a student you care about? Or have me come present to your group? If so, shoot me a DM and let’s make it happen!
