“We don’t want to feel less when we have finished a book; we want to feel that new possibilities of being have been opened to us. We don’t want to close a book with a sense that life is totally unfair and that there is no light in the darkness; we want to feel that we have been given illumination.”
~Walking on Water by Madeleine L’Engle 🌾

A beautiful quote, and a sentiment I find very true in my own reading life and my pursuit of good stories.

🌾On Stories and Other Essays by C.S. Lewis
🌾Walking On Water by Madeleine L’Engle
🌾Howl’s Moving Castle by Dianna Wynn Jones
🌾The Adventures of Tom Bombadil by Tolkien

I hope you enjoy this rather cheerful pile of books!

Of these, I’ve read Walking On Water and On Stories (both wonderful nonfiction works on the essence of writing and creativity), and Howl’s Moving Castle, which was a strange and lovely fairytale read.

I’m hoping to read The Adventures of Tom Bombadil sometime this year, along with Tolkien’s Letters, which, nerd that I am, I am really enjoying!

The time between winter and spring feels entirely like its own season to me and I always take a bit of adjusting, which explains my current rather chaotic reading habits! But books are constant companions through every season, those of weather and of life…

#qotd What book(s) are you reading at the moment, friends? Have you read any of the ones in this post? Do your reading habits change with the seasons?

Happy Reading, as always!

“His gaze wandered from the windows to the stars, as if he would have read in them something that was hidden from him. Many of us would, if we could; but none of us so much as know our letters in the stars yet—or seem likely to do it, in this state of existence—and few languages can be read until their alphabets are mastered.”

What a beautiful and bittersweet thought! Perhaps the stars hide the ending of this story in their shine…

This is the last and, sadly, the unfinished novel of Charles Dickens. The Mystery of Edwin Drood, ironically, will now forever remain a mystery.

What a tragedy! If this promising novel had been completed, I would have willingly followed this wonderful cast of characters along their compelling story beside the stunningly crafted prose to the very end—that was never written—and it very well might have become one of my very favorite Dickens novels. It is certainly one of his best works and achingly full of exciting possibility! Such is life—an as yet unfinished story… But even in its unfinished state, this novel is truly a work of art, worthy of reading and enjoying the masterful craft and of lamenting its hauntingly unresolved nature...

And winter does feel like such a perfect time to settle in with a good mystery, light a candle, watch the snow fall, and escape into the pages of Dickens!

#qotd Have you read this incomplete novel? How do you feel about reading unfinished works of fiction? Who are your favorite characters from the book?
Which clues or plots interested you the most?

Happy Reading, friends!!

“I looked at the stars, and considered how awful it would be for a man to turn his face up to them as he froze to death, and see no help or pity in all the glittering multitude.”

This is one of my favorite Dickens novels.

Some scene or passage from this book is never far from my mind. It’s a deeply human, sorrowful, complicated, and heart-aching story, yet it’s one also full of kindness, compassion, humor, growth, maturity, understanding, second chances, and—perhaps most importantly—hope.

That is something that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

#gotd What are your favorite Dickens novels? Have you read Great Expectations? What did you think? What’s something you love about Dickens’ style?

Happy Reading, friends!!

“At intervals, while turning over the leaves in my book, I studied the aspect of that winter afternoon. Afar, it offered a pale blank of mist and cloud… I was then happy: happy at least in my way. I feared nothing but interruption.”
~Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë 🕯️

Reader, it is winter and I am reading Jane Eyre again.

It is such a wonderful book, full of introspection and beautiful passages to dwell on long after you finish, of tangible descriptions of nature and of the mind, brimming with life, passion, strength, goodness.

This novel has long been a favorite of mine, a truly remarkable work of literature and a timeless story.

It’s one I often return to, especially as a comfort reread. Candlelight, a warm cup of tea, fresh snowfall, and a Brontë novel are excellent companions for a quiet winter evening.

I also love the 2011 Jane Eyre. It is such a beautiful film, incredibly atmospheric and portraying the essence of the book and characters so well.

So I was very happy to find this film cover edition!

#qotd Have you read Jane Eyre? What is something you love about this novel? What books do you enjoy returning to in the wintertime? Classics, fantasy..?

Happy Reading, readers!!

“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. Heaven and the Christmas time be praised!”
~A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens 🥀

One of the most wonderful Christmas stories and one of my personal favorites, A Christmas Carol by Dickens was an immediate and an immortal classic since it was first published at Christmas in 1843.

I’ve revisited this special story every year since I first read it, and I say, it has done me good and will do me good and I say, God bless it! Such goodness and joy, wonder and grace, new hope and Christmas spirit!

(This beautiful edition is illustrated by P.J. Lynch!)

Wishing blessings and books for the year to come. May it come with laughter, purpose, and peace!!

One of the many things I adore about Dickens’ novels is his incredible writing—beautiful, subtle, humorous, profound—I soak in his words with relish.

This winter has come upon me rather suddenly I feel, but I adore winter, its atmosphere of slow wonder...
I always feel inspired to bury myself in literature.

(I’m also enjoying hot chocolate in my Sherlock mug, laughing/crying over BBC Merlin, and rereading my favorite Christmas classic, A Christmas Carol, to assuage my Mystery of Edwin Drood woes.)

#qotd What are you reading this winter, friends? What are your favorite comfort films or shows? What’s your warm seasonal drink of choice?

Happy Reading, as always!

“It was a rimy morning, and very damp. I had seen the damp lying on the outside of my little window, as if some goblin had been crying there all night, and using the window for a pocket-handkerchief.”

Ahh November… the month, to me, which feels most like Dickens. Like Pip, I find that, “Let my body be where it would, my spirit was always wandering, wandering, wandering,” through literature…

I’m holding on to these introspective days, watching the leaves fall from the trees and blanket the ground, holding a warm mug, thankful for the in-between atmosphere of late autumn. A melancholy yet deeply comforting season, the earthy exhale of the year, the perfect atmosphere for reading and dreaming…

#qotd What are your favorite things about late autumn? What book(s) are you reading at the moment? What’s your favorite Dickens novel?

Happy Reading, dear friends!
