Nina Simone ‘Little Girl Blue’ #nowplaying #1959

Nina’s extraordinary debut album is happening right now. Based on the size of the packaging I assumed this was a 2-CD set. Turns out it’s a solitary disc containing the original album plus bonus tracks, along with 80 pages of liner notes and photos- a fascinating read.

I haven’t joined in lately for the weekly record share battle between #superfriendssunday and my team - #legionofdoomsday - but here we go.

The SFS crew decided to share recordings that highlight great backup singing. But on Little Girl Blue, it’s Nina and only Nina delivering the sultry vocals (and world class piano playing). It would be a shame to have it any other way.

Tony Rice #nowspinning #1977

The Man. The Myth. The Legend. The Shirt!

I still can’t get over the fact that for 96% of my life I was blissfully unaware of Tony’s magic. Thanks to this community he’s shot up to near the top of the leaderboard of my favorite artists.

This reissue sounds terrific. Whenever Kevin Gray gets a hold of the original master tapes you know he’ll work wonders on it.

Tony’s got some elite guitar chops. It’s so fluid and I don’t think that even Billy can do it like this (which is in no way a knock on him). Tony is full on shredding but in the most mellow way.

He’s also a great singer. His vocals and diction are so clear that it also fits in as a counter to the #superfriendssunday theme:

Mondegreens - meaning misheard lyrics like Hold me closer Tony Danza. All the words are clear as day here in spite of his Southern draw.

Andy Williams ‘Moon River & Other Great Movie Themes’ #nowspinning #1962

Well I don’t do this very often but I decided to purposely listen to an album I thoroughly dislike.

That’s because this week the #superfriendssunday crew decided to share ‘Meh’ albums… as in a 5 out of 10 mediocrity.

Most of my #legionofdoomsday constituents are countering with a 10/10 masterpiece record.

I’ll go the other way and share something I think is just bad. I did give old Andy a chance though believe me. I sat here and tried to get into it.

I’ll admit he’s a talented Broadway type singer and all, but the Schmaltz is real with this guy. He lays it on THICK. But yeah, this is what my grandparents were digging during the JFK administration. Simpler times.

Let me know if I’m wrong here. Where the Andy Williams die hards at? And do you ever just put on a crappy record for sh*ts and giggles?

Ween ‘Quebec’ #nowspinning #2003

Some new @weeninfo reissues are coming out and stoked to add Quebec to the collection.

There’s a legendary rock story behind the recording of the song Transdermal Celebration. Dean Ween randomly discovered Carlos Santana’s guitar and amp in a storage closet and decided to “borrow” it for the solo.

In a matter of minutes he set up Carlos’ rig and secretly recorded on his mini disc player. I wonder if Santana ever found out and had thoughts about the unauthorized use of his axe.

I’ll submit this as my counter to the #superfriendssunday posts. It doesn’t matter what their record share theme is this week (it’s 1986) because Ween goes against every other kind of music.

Elton John ‘Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy’ #nowspinning #1975

In the back of my mind it’s nagging me that I’m overdue to spin some 70s @eltonjohn

Thanks to our fun record share battle between my squad #legionofdoomsday and the other guys #superfriendssunday I have a good excuse.

Their theme this week is a great side one closer. It got me thinking that hands down, the best ending to any Elton record is Captain Fantastic.

It could be a Top 10 best album ending all time. Not quite Dark Side Of The Moon but it’s pretty dang close.

Elton cranked out so many hits but don’t sleep on the deep cuts. I present to you- CURTAINS.

Martin Denny ‘Exotica Vol III’ #nowspinning #1959

🌴Let it be known that I am fully embracing the 1950s and 60s Exotica vibe. This is my first record in that genre but will be on the hunt for Martin Denny, Enoch Light, Les Baxter, Arthur Lyman etc. I’m also going to need a leopard print robe and a big totem pole here to complete the aesthetic.

This theme fits in nicely as a counter to #superfriendssunday who are posting records from their hometown heroes.

Meanwhile I’m going way back in time to mid Century America’s concept of music from faraway places. I participate in dry-ish January so no Mai Thai currently. 🏝️

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard ‘Nonagon Infinity’ #nowspinning #2016

Sunday spin of the very first @kinggizzard album I ever bought. The #superfriendssunday gang picked ANATOMY as their record share theme of the week, so some of us in #legionofdoomsday chose to counter with robots.

The Ventures ‘Walk, Don’t Run Vol 2’ #nowspinning #1964

Lana Del Rey ‘Born To Die’ (2012)
This week #superfriendssunday group are looking for party/drinking songs thanks to hosts @troyjayadams and @sarabiren . It’s been a hot minute since I jumped on the Sunday rivalry, but time to shake off the dust. This album by Lana is a favorite of mine, but you probably won’t catch me blasting this at a drinking party ( unless I’m ready for everyone to go the fuck home!). Instead I prefer to smoke up, sit back, and just take it all in. A lush beautiful production like this deserves to be admired, especially in an altered state. 😏 Have a great Sunday! 🤟🏻

#superfriendssunday are doing time signatures today : 6/8

Just so we’re all clear the first number 6 indicates how many beats are in a measure. The 8 means that the EIGHTH note gets the beat.

6/8 is a lovely feel for waltzes and such. It flows.

1-2–3-4-5-6 (a little emphasis on 1 & 4)

1-2–3-4-5-6

1-2–3-4-5-6 etc.

Odd meter? Not so much.

Which brings me to my required #legionofdoomsday counter post:

Let’s talk about 11/8.

I ask you to turn on the audio for this sick groove.

Not so flowing. It’s off. Almost like riding a bike with something stuck in one tire.

Thats cuz it’s 11 beats in each measure. Eighth note still getting the beat. Okay. But at this tempo it doesn’t make sense to count to 11 over and over.

Instead let’s break it down:

3 + 3 + 3 + 2 =11

So you’d count it this like:

1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2
1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2
1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2 Etc.

And THAT folks, is how you do the music.
