Moose River Bow Trip — Day Two

After a restless night at Log Jam, we packed up camp, finished the Holeb Falls portage, and took some time to explore the falls before getting back on the river.

Low water meant lining the canoes through Mosquito Rips, which also produced the quote of the trip when a completely unnecessary misunderstanding ended with Adam yelling, “Don’t bring that energy around here!” 😂

The Moose River continued to be full of interesting sights: huge glacial boulders, beaver sign everywhere, piles of mussel shells likely left by muskrats, and strange rock mounds we later learned were probably spawning nests built by chubs.

We finished the day at Attean Falls North, where we battled some absolutely vicious mosquitoes before settling in around the fire and watching beavers swim below camp.

Rain coming tonight, then one final day on the Moose River tomorrow.

Moose River, Day 1

Another weekend adventure started in typical fashion: working late Friday, racing back to Farmington to load the canoe trailer and gear, grabbing Carter, and heading north to Jackman.

This trip was Adam’s idea, a canoe trip to celebrate his 42nd birthday and reunite most of our Allagash crew from last summer. Carter joined us too, making this his first multi-day river trip where he’d actually be paddling instead of just along for the ride.

We launched from Holeb Pond Saturday morning under perfect conditions: mid-70s, low humidity, sunshine, and calm winds. From there we paddled into narrow Holeb Stream before joining the much cooler waters of the Moose River.

Wildlife was everywhere. Eagles, herons, beavers, painted turtles, and moose tracks covered the muddy banks. The river itself was beautiful, with enormous glacial boulders seemingly around every corner.

Of course, no river trip is complete without sacrificing something to the water gods. Less than ten minutes after launching, Drew dropped his sunglasses into Holeb Pond. Despite a valiant underwater recovery attempt, they were gone.

A few hours later we stopped at Barrett Brook for lunch. Drew, appropriately nicknamed “Moose Man,” disappeared into the woods looking for antler sheds. Twenty or thirty minutes later, he emerged carrying an entire moose skull with both antlers intact. 😂

He also discovered an abandoned cabin in the woods with the rather unsettling message:

“Are you sure you were invited?”

Drew decided he wasn’t.

Later we lined our canoes through the shallow Camel Rips, did some swimming, and continued downstream toward Holeb Falls.

We finally pulled into Log Jam Campsite around 6:45 p.m. Rather than push farther, we called it home for the night.

The tent sites weren’t exactly flat. I spent most of the night tossing, turning, sliding around, and serenading the entire campsite with the obnoxious crinkling of my air mattress.

Yes, this is what I live for.

Embrace the discomfort, get up tomorrow, and do it all over again.

For the man himself, the Moose Antler Guru, the one and only @moosemandrew . Before we start making antlers available for sale, we had to make one for the guy who puts in all the work finding these antlers. He requested a lochness monster / Nintendo 64 Tomb Raider theme antler. He had a screenshot from the game and we made his idea come to life! Hand painted with acrylic paint, look forward to making more!
