📖 MY BOOKSTA BACKSTORY 💭 When did you start your account? First post was February 2021, feels like yesterday lol 💭 What made you start your account? I really only got back into reading at the end of 2020 because I (stop reading here if your squeamish lol) dropped a huge kitchen knife on my foot while cooking and ended up needing surgery. I couldn’t walk or work for 6 weeks and I was bored out of my mind. I wanted to have a fun place to keep track of all my books that was more creative than goodreads so here I am! I love telling this story because this hilarious freak accident led me to so many wonderful people through all our love of books 🧀❤️ 💭 What inspired your username? I took my personal IG handle and just added reads with the intent of changing it later but now I could never!! 💭 What was the first review you posted? My first review ever was Wine Girl by Victoria James - I recommend this book for the drama in the goodreads reviews LOL 💭 What's your favourite thing about booksta? I have connected and reconnected with so many people through books over the past year 🥹. I have made so many new friends in this cute little internet corner and I am so grateful! This is truly the kindest community on the internet. I really cant even express my gratitude to everyone who supports this account - I’ve had a lot of cool opportunities thanks to this space and I’m excited for what’s to come 🫶🏼 💭 Booksta made me buy... What didn’t it make me buy… lol. The last new releases I purchased were The Maidens by Alex Michaelides and The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I’m a big used book shopper and have added like over 50 books to my shelf since starting this account hehe oops 🙊 💭 Favourite bookstagram tag? I love the What This Week tag! 💜 💚 Reproductive Rights Stack 💜💚 Stack For A Cause 💜💚 My good friend @medstudent.reads was kind enough to tag me in this stack for a cause challenge. Thanks @bibliolau19 and @berittalksbooks for creating this #reproductiverightsstack by stacking purple for #womenrights and green for #abortionrights . From now until the end of August, they will donate $1 (up to $350) for every purple and green stack to @prochoiceamerica. I don’t know a lot about this topic, so I’m writing what @medstudent.reads wrote in her post. Please give @medstudent.reads a follow, she’s one of the nicest people you can meet on this app. One of my reasons for joining bookstagram in the beginning was as a means to educate my fellow bookworms. From the perspective of a future healthcare provider, I’m devastated at the health consequences the reversal of Roe v. Wade will have on the women of our country. Women are already facing life threatening situations because they can’t access the healthcare they need. Pregnancy is dangerous y’all. For example, 2% of pregnancies become ectopic, which are nonviable and absolutely life threatening. Without abortion, the patient is at high risk of hemmorhage and death. This is just one of many ways that pregnancy can threaten a woman’s life if an abortion is not available. The argument that life saving measures will always be given to a woman in danger is not valid. We are already seeing doctors across the nation being punished for giving these procedures when necessary, and women reaching critical condition when hospital administration and lawyers not allowing certain procedures to be performed. I still prefer physical books most 🤷🏼‍♀️ 💕 new or old releases: I like both, but tend to gravitate to newer releases 💕 broken or unbroken spines: I try my hardest to keep them unbroken but I end up with quite a few broken ones 😬 💕 hardcover or paperbacks: Definitely prefer paperbacks 💕 emotional or happy reads: Depends on my mood! Can’t have too many of either in a row though so I like to alternate 💕 mood reader or set tbr: As hard as I try, I cannot stick to a tbr… #moodreading for life 💕 silent reader or read with noise: I usually need it to be silent which I know makes me a psycho 😂 💕 bookmark or dog ear: Have to use bookmarks! No dog ears 🙅🏼‍♀️ 💕 classic book lover or hater: I only have a few classics that I like, but otherwise don’t usually read them 💕 fiction or non-fiction: Fiction all day, although I love a good memoir! 🤍 Comfort Challenge 🤍 @thebrightonbookshelf tagged me in this challenge… can you tell I think it’s so cute? I did it right away 😂 Like Julia, I realized as I was writing these out that a lot of them are very nostalgic. Some of them have been comfort for me in the past but I haven’t necessarily reached for them in a while. Spilled bag challenge 👜 @ruthiereads_ tagged me in this challenge ages ago and I’m finally doing it 😅 Inside my giant tote I always have my wallet, makeup bag, extra masks, AirPods, and whatever book I’m reading. Honestly I often have 2 or 3 books crammed in here but I’m travelling light today 👀 I also sometimes have some sort of children’s book/puppet/toy that I need for work but I’m between programming sessions so I’m not carrying around weird plastic dinosaurs at the moment 🦖 Not pictured: my dirty lunch dishes and a pair of socks that ended up in the bottom of the bag and definitely need to find their way to a washing machine. 📚Spell Your User Name Challenge!📚 I was tagged by nobody because I made this up! Here is a nice menagerie of books, some I've read, some I still need to. Here's my rapid-fire thoughts on each. 📕"Room" (9). Atmospheric, haunting, but ultimately affirming. 📕"Everything I Never Told You" (9.5). Ng's debut - the family dynamics are so rich and nuanced. 📕"All the Light We Cannot See" (TBR). World War II can be a hard era for me to read about, but I've heard raves. 📕"Daisy Jones & the Six" (TBR). This will likely be a buddy read; I've finished "Evelyn Hugo" and will post a review down the line! 📕"We the Animals" (TBR). Slim novel I bought on title alone that's been on my shelf for years, haha. 📕"Invisible Man" (10). One of the ten best books I have ever read. Ellison's lone novel is a literary masterpiece. 📕"Transcendent Kingdom" (10). As a man of faith who wrestles with the big questions, this spoke volumes to me. 📕"Honeydew" (DNF?). Short stories. They're okay, but I'm struggling to get into them. Abandoned about halfway through last November. 📕"Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh" (TBR). On the title alone, this sounds epic. 📕"I Crawl Through It" (11, honestly). My favorite book of 2021 and one of the few books I've ever read that made me wish I had written it. 📕"Kissing Doorknobs" (9.5). A warm, compassionate look at a girl who has OCD. 📕"Ella Minnow Pea" (TBR). Apparently a novel for linguists and language lovers - sounds right up my alley! 📕"You Go First" (8.5). It was the only book I have that starts with a "Y." Together, class! "READ WITH MIKEY!" 🐈‍⬛Black Stack🐈‍⬛ @thelegalreads and @thebrightonbookshelf tagged me in this challenge 🖤 I love a good colour stack! I’m not gonna write a blurb about all of these but there’s a couple I want to highlight: 🖤 Scarborough is an intimate, slice of life story about a low-income, multicultural community in Canada. A really heart wrenching story that explores important issues. 🖤 I haven’t read Sea Witch Rising, but it’s a sequel to Sea Witch, which I really really enjoyed. Can’t wait to check this one out. It’s a YA villain origin story inspired by the little mermaid! 🖤 Speaking of fairytale retellings, I’m also excited to read Girls Made of Snow and Glass, which is a “feminist fantasy” (!!!) reimagining of Snow White.
