“And if ye shall believe in Christ ye will believe in these words, for they are the words of Christ.” — 2 Nephi 33:10

The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ. Nephi’s final testimony reminds us that these are not merely his words, but the words of Christ. The invitation is simple: Believe in Christ, read His words, and discover His truth for yourself.

Joseph Smith grew up amid intense religious activity in western New York. Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, and other Christians offered competing interpretations of scripture and salvation. His mother and several siblings associated with the Presbyterians, while Joseph felt “somewhat partial to the Methodist sect.”

Joseph’s accounts describe two connected concerns. His 1832 history emphasizes his awareness of sin, desire for forgiveness, and concern that existing churches had departed from New Testament Christianity. His 1838 account emphasizes the conflict among denominations and his desire to know which church he should join.

While reading the Bible, Joseph encountered James 1:5: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” Believing that God could answer sincere prayer, he decided to ask Him directly.

Joseph did not enter the grove intending to establish a new religion. He entered seeking forgiveness, wisdom, and direction. According to his testimony, the answer he received became the beginning of something much greater than the question he carried there.

The Restoration began with a young man taking scripture seriously enough to ask God what he should do, and believing that God might actually answer.

Why do Latter-day Saints build temples?

A temple is not simply an elaborate meetinghouse. Meetinghouses are used for weekly worship, instruction, and community activities. Temples are dedicated for sacred ordinances, covenant-making, prayer, and instruction centered on Jesus Christ.

Sacred space appears throughout the Bible. God met His people on holy ground, commanded Moses to build the tabernacle, and later accepted temples in Jerusalem: “Let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them” (Exodus 25:8).

This does not mean God can be contained within a building. Solomon acknowledged, “The heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?” (1 Kings 8:27). A temple does not confine God. It is consecrated to His worship and purposes.

Jesus Christ fulfilled animal sacrifice through His own perfect sacrifice, yet sacred worship continued. After His Resurrection, the disciples praised God in the temple, and Peter and John went there to pray (Luke 24:53; Acts 3:1).

Modern temple worship points to Christ and depends entirely upon His Atonement. Latter-day Saints receive instruction about God’s plan, make covenants to follow Christ, are sealed as families, and perform ordinances for those who died without receiving them. These ordinances do not force salvation upon the dead. Each person remains free to accept or reject them.

Temple worship is sometimes described as secret, but Latter-day Saints consider it sacred. Its purposes and covenants may be discussed openly, while certain ceremonial details are reserved for those prepared to participate.

Temples are not built because God needs a house. They are built because His children need places devoted to His presence, covenants, and redeeming work.

Every temple points beyond itself to Jesus Christ, through whom we may return to God and become united as an eternal family.
