Day in the life of a sports journalist 🎙️🏃‍♂️

Full week driving for Royal Mail, Glasgow to Newcastle on Saturday, commentating on the Jarrow 10km, squeezing in a run along the Quayside, then back to Glasgow before work on Monday. My retired legs were absolutely ruined, but what a blast! 😂🙌

Massive thanks to the @topflightraces team for the opportunity and @morrell_live for having me alongside him in the studio. Absolutely loved it!

Next stop… Fulham 10K? 👀🎙️

Three races remain and the women’s Top Flight Series title is still wide open 👀

This Sunday’s Jarrow 10K brings together two Olympians with two very different routes to victory.

🏃‍♀️ Rose Harvey brings the strength of a 2:23 marathon runner and European team gold medallist. Her plan? Stay patient early, then use that endurance to turn the screw in the second half.

⚡ Gabriela DeBues-Stafford brings world-class track speed, with PBs of 3:56 for 1,500m and 14:31 for 5,000m. Making her road 10K debut, can she keep a lid on the early pace before unleashing her speed over the closing kilometres?
But this is far from a two-woman race.

🔥 Series leader Emily Haggard-Kearney arrives with a 32:01 10K PB, maximum points from Quayside and a 5K course record already to her name this season.
Marathon strength. Track speed. Series-leading form.

Who takes the win at Jarrow? 🏆

1500m speed meets marathon strength ⚡

One of the biggest clashes at this Sunday’s Top Flight Jarrow 10K sees track star Gabriela DeBues-Stafford take on Olympian Rose Harvey, who is stepping down from the marathon.

Rose brings a 2:23 marathon PB, European team gold and a 32:59 10K, while Gabriela has that blistering 14:31 5,000m speed.

Two very different athletes. One fascinating race.
And these are only two of a VERY strong field.

Just 69 seconds separate four of the contenders’ marathon PBs. Over 26.2 miles, that leaves plenty of room for tactics 👀

Who holds their nerve in the pack? Who pushes too early? And could Marshall Smith’s experience of the Chester course prove decisive when the hills arrive in the second half?

BEIJING 2027 — ARE WE CREATING OPPORTUNITY OR CREATING BARRIERS?

World Athletics already has a demanding qualification system through entry standards and World Rankings.

So why add another UK Athletics standard?

British athletes are increasingly self-funding, while quality competition is harder to find and more expensive to access.

If an athlete has achieved the World Athletics standard or earned a World Rankings place, an additional domestic barrier doesn’t necessarily create higher standards.

It can simply mean fewer British athletes competing.

Elite athletes develop through competition, coaching, experience and opportunity.

Take away those opportunities and we risk creating fewer athletes — and eventually reducing the depth of some events in Britain.

🇬🇧 The UK is one of the world’s best-funded sporting nations.

So why make the pathway harder for our own athletes?

Build the next generation.
Create opportunity.
Grow British athletics, don’t shrink it.

🚨 **EXCLUSIVE: JAKE SMITH IS HEADING TO VALENCIA…. ON PACING DUTIES!

Fresh off a 2:09 marathon in Berlin and a PB of more than 90 seconds, Jake Smith reveals he’ll be back on marathon duty later this year, pacing in Valencia.

But there’s a lot more to this one.

Jake joins Rich Morrell to break down exactly what happened in Berlin, why he believes a major change in his training has helped unlock another level, and the huge role cross training is now playing in his programme.

He also opens up on the tougher periods after London marathon, when the results weren’t matching the work, and what it took to get himself back to running his best.

2:09. A big PB. A different approach. And now Valencia awaits. 🇪🇸

🎙️ Full conversation with Jake Smith now on the Trackstaa YouTube channel, link in bio 🤝
