Two more in the books! For a fourth swing at making knives I'm really pleased with these, the weight and balance in-hand is just great. The Honesuki only weighs 90g! Comparing this Santoku to my first try at a kitchen knife... the differences are stark and I love seeing the progression. Working in batches sure is a great way to learn. The steel is AEB-L at 61 HRC and the handles are spalted maple and ebony. The Santoku had a full-height flat grind on both sides. The Honesuki has a flat grind on one side and a compound grind on the the other — the hope is that aids in food release, we'll see if it works. #honesuki #santoku #wahandle #aebl #mossbladeworks

I made a couple kitchen knives! And for my second time making knives, I'm quite pleased with them. I set out to make a knife that was inspired by a Santoku and a Bunka – my most use kitchen knives. After a few sketches, this was the profile I ended up with. I like the simplicity of a wa handle, so that's what I went with. The bottom is stabilized maple, and the top is PaperStone countertop material, leftover from a reno. For steel, I went with 3 mm RWL34 at 61 HRC. I made one for my brother and one for me. I also made a leather slip sheath, for my brother's – he likes to travel with a kitchen knife. I lined the sheath with high-pile fleece, for retention and it worked great. There are lots of things I could have done better, but for my first attempt making a kitchen knife, and only my second time making knives, I'm happy with them. I want to thank a few specific people: @simplelittlelife.ca – for his wa handle making videos, and his glue up videos, they were a huge help. @vachonknives – for his grinding videos, and ferrule shaping videos, these were also a huge help. @nordquistdesigns – for talking me out of trying an s-grind on my first kitchen knife, and for the tips on grinding my blades. Jesse, I still really need to work on getting it thinner behind the edge, but your tips helped. @spacemonkeyknives – for general tips, and extolling the virtues of the ultra fine Scotch-Brite belt, the finish looks great and has excellent food release. Next up will be back to my Mini Chute knives, but I wanted to do these in time for the holidays and those got stuck at heat treat for a long time.

Here are some better pics of my Cricket Mod, I'm going to call it "Grillo" - Spanish for Cricket. I'm sure some of you will see this and think "he ruined a Cricket." And I see that point, but it's my knife and I'm glad I did it. Here is what I did: Reground the blade into a leaf shape. Hand-sanded the flats Crowned the spine of the blade with j-flex belts. Made a show-side scale out of @g.l._hansenandsons Mexican blanket G-Carta. The goal was to make it feel like a river stone. Refinished the clip. Engine turned the lock-side. This looked great… then when cleaning up that day I accidentally scratched the new finish up quite badly. Chamfered all contact points, including the Spydie hole.  Lapped the PB washers Also, I wish Google photos was better at consistently setting white balance. #spyderco #spydercocricket #mexicanblanketgcarta #gcarta #micarta #knifemod #cricket

I finished my first knives! What a fun, challenging, interesting, and overall just cool experience. I couldn't have made this progress without the awesome knife community, I'm sure I'll forget a few but thanks are due to the following: @brtbladeworks, Thanks for all the Tsukaito tips, I really appreciate your assistance along the way. @brightforwar , thanks for telling me about Thomas Buck's book. @spacemonkeyknives and @nordquistdesigns, Thanks for tips on cutting blanks. @tashibharucha, Thanks for the tips on belt progression, I still think of the Trizact gator belts as "Tashi belts". @elishewitz_knives, Thanks for all the info you shared about Cubitron belts, I was really impressed by them. @terzuola_design , Thanks for your book, the general tips and know how were a great foundation; I know I'll always think of you when adding more clamps! @gentrycustomknives , Thanks for your video on etching stainless; your 50/50 ratio worked great for me. And, thanks to my buddy Jesse (@livewake1) who helped me source the EXACT workbenches I was after, pretty much all of this was made on them. I can't wait to make the next ones, they'll be better... I hope 😅
