A little Carne Vale love 💙

#ThankYou to everyone who attended Matters of Rhythm And Harmony & who helped me bring Carne Vale to life.

A colossal thank you to AD Kim for the opportunity to grow as an artist and for the chance to use dance as a tool for learning, dreaming & healing. What a ride!

Carne Vale was my way of paying homage to Mr.Gerard “Gerry” Weekes & me processing grief through art, imagination, movement, music, community and #Jazz. I thank everyone who showed up daily & gave their best.

I hope Gerry and his family feel honored by this work.

Thanks to the beautiful dancers & Laura for rockin with me & bringing the memories of their loved ones into the process & performance.

We remember them & never stop loving them.

A huge thank you to MD Carsten, the amazing band, the costume department led by the brilliant Hannah, the tech & production team & lighting designer Steve, Kim, Vicki, Michèle & Drew for your care & artistry.

Grief comes like a tide… sometimes calm, sometimes rough enough to pull you under. When those waves come knockin’, it’s a blessing to have people who help carry you back to shore—whether they know they’re doing it or not.

Dance is medicine. One of the oldest prayers. Across the African diaspora we’ve danced to mourn, to praise, to resist & to remember. Alchemizing complex emotions from what overwhelms into solace. For me, it meant the world when people shared stories of their ancestors after a show. I’m honoured to have been a part of their healing journey or walk of remembrance.

If you are grieving, ask for help where you can. Move your body anyway you can. Pray, jump, wine, breathe & watch yourself begin to navigate emotional waves with a little more grace & kindness. Healing is a personal journey & there’s no perfect way to do it.

To those dancing somewhere beyond what we can see - we miss you. We #celebrate you. We carry you.

Carne Vale also celebrated beautiful new beginnings :) Congratulations to my dear friends Kaja & Luke on their growing #family & to all the new moms at DJD. Your joys became a the light along this healing journey.

Dear @moss1035

I’m writing these to share with you and the world how you played a role in my life as a human, as a student, as an artist and the many variations of the dancer I am today.

I remember the very first time I met you in a post secondary setting, my first class with you, my first opportunity to work for you outside the school walls, my first serious conversation about mental and professional approach in the early stages of my dance career, and the unspoken and unconditional guidance you’ve shared with me moving forward.

Thank you for believing in me, thank you for trusting in me, thank you for embracing me even when I had doubts and didn’t have all the tools with me, you showed me a way.

I wish you all the best and congratulations on your retirement. I am forever grateful for the impact you’ve made in your career and it’s an honor to be a part of it.

✨ Rhythmic Reflections Returns ✨

It’s been a minute, but the archives are calling again, this time with memories from former company dancer and current Artistic Outreach Associate Joanne Baker.

Joanne takes us back to Soul Jugglers (1999) the season where dancers were pushed into a full circus of new skills. Juggling, baton-twirling, plate-spinning, tumbling at the UofC gymnastics centre, rope climbing, stilt walking, elaborate clown makeup, and finding their “inner clown” all became part of the process. Her reflections capture just how daring, playful, and physically demanding this creation truly was.

Alongside Soul Jugglers, we’re also spotlighting another gem from the archives: Global Vibe (1998) an energetic celebration of cultural dance forms and the artists who shaped them.
These two shows remind us of the creative range DJD has explored over the years.

From whimsical theatrical worlds to large-scale cultural collaborations and the artists who brought them to life with curiosity, humour, and heart.

From ancestors to future ancestors comes information;
Historiographically the moving body is a source and the evidence.
We use the Sankofa bird image to dig into the history and live in a continuum. We assess the significance of this dancing practice. We embody, reflect and embody again. Embodied evidence of a restorative action - dancing is both medicine and meditation. Dancing is healing . We dance our own way, we dance in the tradition using both legacy and vernacular as flash points. In the move and chat we moved together - living in a state of rich relationality. Africanist aesthetics call for us to flash our spirit in community. The back bone did indeed slide and the ensuing groove was uplifting-a Saturday night Sunday morning experience in one hour🔥
Joy and respect were centre stage. We connected, from tradition-bearers to neophytes, and all manner of information and energy was exchanged. Respect was centre stage. Vulnerability was appreciated as we explored some rooted-jazz licks and riffs. We played, we laughed, we worked it out, improvised, and were grateful to be allowed to share some knowledge and time together.
A restorative system of sharing and engaging so very healing. Never enough time these research conferences, workshops and festival opportunities are so rich -thank you everyone. In what some are calling an “empathy drought” we found solace and inspiration in dance -and each other- at Moving Inspirations Festival 2025

Introducing MICHÈLE MOSS

Michèle Moss is a dancer, choreographer, researcher and educator that has co-founded Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. She has found Greta pleasure in exploring the nature of jazz through performance-creation and arts-based educational research. In her diverse career in dance, she has experience with swing, salsa and house dance with her research takes the forms of creation and textual projects. Publishing her research in journals and magazines, she has also conducted ethnographic research in fields nationally and internationally.

She will be presenting “A Tight 11: dispatches from the inside” in collaboration with Kaja Irwin and Sabrina Naz Comănescu. They are celebrating connection, community cohesion and imagining a future that allows for real listening and communion. This is an opportunity to witness and to experience something that will never happen again, a one and done premiere. Kaja and Sabrina will make themselves vulnerable for the pleasure of playing at the edges of control-no control and learning from it. The audience and creatives in the theatre are in partnership as well, since they are all seeking transcendence. Michèle moss would like to thank you all in advance for allowing them to explore this state of grace.

We are a little bit over a week away until opening night and we are excited to announce the Festival Schedule for the Moving Inspirations Dance Festival. On Friday, November 7 and Saturday, November 8, from 9:30 to 5:00/6:00, there will be Master Classes and Move & Chats, as well as Dance Classes that are open to the public. Join classes with master teachers such as: Vincent Mantose, Wunmi Idowu, Michèle Moss, Melo Omat, Mikhail Morris, Emmanuelle Martin, Casimiro Nhussi, Michael Morley, Pulga Muchochoma and Mpooe Mogale. We’re excited to have them teach these classes and we’re excited for Winnipeg to learn from them. All classes will be held at Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers at 204-211 Bannatyne Ave. In the next few days, we will be showing the lineups of who will be performing on each night!
