This was our recent Berlin edition: Salon No. 20 with @Moulsari Jain on “the Productivity Paradox”.

There is something about all the micro decisions we take along a single day that make us experience what is called productivity. We are feeling productive when our inner environment responds well to what we believe our outer aligned calls for. This is fairly straightforward when we are facing a clear commitment, such as holding a presentation three days from now, or filling up the empty fridge before the supermarkets close in the evening. Either we are able to take decisions that will carry us towards fulfilling the commitment, or we aren't.

However, the sentiment during our Salon deviated from this framing. We felt that this is an oversimplified, almost bland way of seeing productivity.

What happens if there is bleak uncertainty regarding what question is calling to be answered? Or when the questions that we identify as genuinely meaningful are just too vast or complex to guide our decisions accordingly? What happens if we need to be unproductive to move?

This is counterintuitive for business thinking, yet an all too contemporary task because of the nature of the challenges we are facing.

Productivity then develops a different flavor. It becomes that kind of productivity artists thrive in. It lies in a courage to confront large or vague questions, perseverance in renewing that question over and over again, the guts to consider all hitherto 'output' as insufficient and to start all over again, overcoming any regret. This is where a much more deeply meaningful productivity hides.

And it turned out that we have dedicated our twentieth Salon to exactly this artistic kind of productivity in all its beauty and glory.

We thank our wonderful speaker Moulsari Jain, our host Marc Hagen Krüttli of VIER iusta, our Sommelière Maria-Elisabeth Niebius of @zest.wine, our colleague Parasheva (@nurichmachpara) and all the lovely personalities who came to join us for bringing this energetic evening together.

We’re starting something new! ✨

Every Thursday, we’ll share a snippet from one of the inspiring talks from previous TEDxBreda editions.

We’re kicking things off with a question:

What did you do this week to truly rest?

In 2023, Moulsari Jain explored on our stage the idea that rest doesn’t equal laziness. Sometimes, taking a step back is exactly what helps us think, feel and create better.

It’s a simple idea, but powerful idea, that could reshape the way we look at work.

What do you think? Do you agree, or do you see it differently? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

On Friday morning the first edition of The Pause took place, a recurring slow conversation where we can meet (new) people and have a conversation about rest and slowing down and whatever arises from there. My initial feeling earlier this week was to cancel because of some last minute cancellations, leaving me with only two other participants. That was not what I had in mind.

And then again, if I was really honest with myself, my energy was quite low and hosting a bigger group would require a different energy of myself, so what if I just parked my ego, enjoyed the moment and worked with what was there?

It turned out to be a very special moment. A true “pause” in my hectic week.

Two ladies that had heard of each other (but never met before) showed up. Beautiful soul @moulsari and dear friend @annemiek leclaire.

From the moment they entered the beautiful (and from that moment ‘sacred’ ) space @nj_space_amsterdam words, space and energy was shared in such a pure and honest manner that it left me feeling so grateful afterwards. Amongst many things, we spoke about what it means to maintain healthy boundaries, about the importance of community. We spoke about (suppressed) anger (is it an emotion?) , aging, allowing yourself to embrace the dark and maybe even ‘breaking down’.

Leaving you with a quote from @elizabeth_gilbert_writer that we started out with:

The most powerful woman in the room is quite often the most relaxed woman in the room.

Have a restful and relaxed Sunday! 🌥 Slow living

Take your time.

The best and most valuable things take time.

Because time is what deepens things, and makes them richer.

Diamonds. Marble. Wine. Cheese.

Relationships. Ideas. Love. Pleasure.

Let things ferment. Let them evolve naturally. Take yourself and your ego out of the equation.

Become the facilitator. Hold the space and the intention, and then let the magic emerge on its own.

If you keep digging up the seed, if you keep opening the oven, if you keep uncorking the bottle…

It can never ripen to its full potential.

So, instead, learn to be the custodian, that guards the growth — naturally.

You don’t need to do anything actively to help nature do it’s thing.

All you need to do is slow down, manage your urges, and deepen your trust.

And let your patience pay off.

Will you? I’m holding space for you to ripen and emerge, too.

Confidence. Where does it actually come from?

Like consciousness, it’s impossible to pinpoint exactly where our confidence is born and how it shapes our idea of ourselves.

But this I know — my confidence is responsible for most of the most fun and pleasurable things I’ve ever done.

It allows me to be in the spotlight and shine. It allows me to try things I’ve not done before, and succeed. It allows me to let go and trust myself, my body and mind, to guide me, no matter what. It allows me to treat my life experience with enough respect to write about it honestly.

My confidence is responsible for all the roles I have ever played in my life — for myself and for others.

But it’s not a given. I’ve faced moments, even phases, of complete insecurity and a lack of belief in myself. They made me curl up in the darkness and wish the world away. They made me waiver, falter and fail to even try.

So how did I get my confidence back from those moments? Where did it come from?

Sometimes it was the right outfit, or the right shoes. Sometimes it was the right words from someone else. Sometimes it was a workout. Or a tv show.

But if I’m really honest, all of those external things simply brought me back to the source of my confidence within myself: that part of me I can’t quite locate in my body even though I feel it there. That makes me stand up straighter and trust myself more and believe in myself and my ability to tackle anything that comes my way.

Because it’s not a place. It’s a relationship. With myself.

And I’m ready to share with the world how I rebuild my confidence and my relationship to myself over and over again — in a Course on Confidence.

Interested in learning more?

Please write me a DM or comment below and tell me what you struggle with and how confidence could help YOU.

I’d be delighted to help you with everything I’ve ever learnt about building confidence authentically and fundamentally.

Because confidence isn’t something you’re both with, it’s something you get to develop. And I’m here to help you with yours. 💖
