From World Art Day yesterday to World Voice Day and National Librarian Day today, it feels like the perfect moment to celebrate the many ways creativity shows up across Putnam County.

This weekend, that looks like student artwork on display, community theater, live music, library programming, gallery moments, and performances that remind us how much local culture matters. Art gives us something to see, voice gives us something to share, and libraries continue to make space for both.

If you have been looking for a reason to get out and support something local, consider this your sign. Swipe through for a few arts and performance events happening in Putnam this weekend.

At Mahopac Public Library’s “Remember the Ladies: 18th Century Women in Song,” performer Margery Cohen of the Linda Russell Trio gave attendees a look at the limberjack, a delightfully unusual folk percussion instrument, before expanding into a larger point: the importance of music during the Revolutionary era. Featuring Linda Russell, Margery Cohen, and Christa Patton, the program explored how music helped tell stories, preserve perspective, lift morale, and, in the case of portable instruments like the fife, even help communicate across camp life and wartime settings. Stay tuned for more coverage of Putnam 250 events, and be sure to follow us and visit our website at the link in bio.

From maple syrup and migrating birds to student theater, community gatherings, Revolutionary-era programming, and local education highlights, the first weeks of spring have brought plenty of activity across Putnam and nearby Philipstown.

A lot can bloom in just a few weeks when local arts, schools, organizations, and neighbors keep showing up for one another.

Join us at @mahopaclibrary this Sunday, March 22 at 2 pm as the acclaimed Ministers of Apollo Chamber Ensemble will present a chamber music concert featuring works inspired by the period and performed by an ensemble of talented musicians and vocalist Eliza Vincz-Lichak.

This event is part of Putnam County’s broader Revolutionary Putnam County initiative, which is preparing the community for the 250th anniversary of American independence while highlighting the county’s unique role in the nation’s founding.

This program is free and open to the public, though registration is encouraged through the Mahopac Public Library website.

History came alive at Mahopac Library on Sunday, March 8.

As part of the Rev 250 commemoration, guests were transported back 250 years through an engaging presentation by master teacher and reenactor Rob Buccheri, who brought Putnam County’s Revolutionary War history to life with vivid storytelling and local insight.

The program highlighted the contributions of ordinary people whose courage helped shape the Patriot cause, including Daniel Ludington, Enoch Crosby, and Sybil Ludington. It was a powerful reminder that the story of the American Revolution was not only made by famous names, but also by local families, farmers, spies, and militia members whose actions helped shape history right here in our region.

Buccheri also reflected on why these stories still matter today, emphasizing the importance of teaching younger generations how democracy was fought for, protected, and preserved through years of struggle.

The event also helped build excitement for upcoming Rev 250 programming, including Putnam County Heroes Battle the Redcoats on June 6 at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park in Carmel. Mahopac Library is also currently featuring a third-floor gallery display of Revolutionary War flags, history panels, and portraits of General Israel Putnam.

Thank you to Mahopac Library, Rob Buccheri, and Putnam County Historian Jennifer Cassidy for helping keep local history alive.
