Two excellent gigs last week, four great sets...so cool to have a brilliant support AND headliner😊
.
.
Glasgow for the sublime @wwilly.masonn opening for @evangriffithdando & @thelemonheadsofficial at @theclassicgrand. Having waited two decades to see him, this was my second Willy Mason gig of the year and he didn't disappoint. Brilliant songwriting, beautifully performed with that amazing voice. Couldn't ask for more
.
.
Though more was duly delivered. Must admit to some reservations ahead of the show, in light of Evan's well publicised issues with substances and mental health. Needn't have worried; from the first chord a happy, smiling, healthy looking Mr Dando and his band took the roof off the place. I could write screeds and screeds about this but I'll just say that I couldn't have wished for anything more. His vocals were so good that 'Confetti' was like the album version.
.
.
A sublime four song run: Rudderless, Stove, a Mike Nesmith cover - Different Drum - at full indie-grunge tilt then Hannah and Gaby just stopped me in my tracks, the place was losing its collective mind. And the singalongs on Evan's solo set, my goodness, everyone in the room word perfect on Outdoor Type and Frank Mills...it was quite emotional altogether.
.
.
To @labelleangele in Edinburgh for another night of 90s indie/fuzz/Americana/college rock in the shape of @buffalotomband with @mrgerardlove opening for them...
.
.
In Teenage Fanclub, I think it was Gerry who wrote all the best songs...he played a couple of really beautiful arrangements of Fannies songs, like Starsign, in amongst his solo stuff, accompanied by his very talented friend, Tom...who I assume was no relation to the evening's headliners🤭 A fantastic show, marred only by some Fannies uber fans acting like uber fannies, by talking through his set🤦
.
.
I'd only seen Buffalo Tom once, Queen's Hall in 1994, and @billjanovitz told us that was actually the last time they'd played the city! A high energy set with all the favourites, including MY favourite, Tangerine. Then they brought Gerry on in their encore - they had apparently toured together back in the day - for a full band Sparky's Dream 🥰🥰
.
.
Two top nights😊

Gerard Love and Alex Rex play Sat 12th Dec... tickets now on sale (link in bio) 😍

We are super excited for this rare intimate show ... capacity is LIMITED!

Gerard Love is a Glasgow-based singer/songwriter, used to play bass and write songs in Teenage Fanclub, released a solo LP in 2012 under the name Lightships, has a new LP in the works to be released sometime in 2027. For this special show Gerard will be playing a stripped back, intimate set.

Alex Rex is the 'ghost-rock' project of Alex Neilson (Trembling Bells, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Shirley Collins, Current 93 et al). Inspired by Greek Tragedy, Barbara Streisand and Alex's own internal critic, Alex Rex perform songs of love, loss and loathing that make the detestable whistleable.

It was also lovely to see @mrgerardlove open for @buffalotomband in London @villageunderground last night. He played a mixture of favourites from his Teenage Fanclub days and more recent material from his Lightships record. He also came out at the end to join his old friends Buffalo Tom (Teenage Fanclub toured with them in the 90s so they’ve know each other for a long time) and they played Sparky’s Dream together.

I finally got to see the legendary @buffalotomband last night @villageunderground playing to a sold out crowd in London. I did see them once in the 90s at the Reading Festival but this was my first time seeing them doing a headline show and it was a blast the whole way through, with the band playing songs from pretty much all their albums through the years including classics like Treehouse, Sodajerk and Taillights Fade (Birdbrain was sadly cut at the end though due to time constraints!). They even brought out old friend @mrgerardlove who had opened for them, to sing a fantastic version of one of his best Teenage Fanclub songs, Sparky’s Dream, at the end. Despite someone collapsing during the show (apparently they were fine) and the band having to briefly stop the show as well as an early 9.30pm curfew that meant they had to cut a few songs, it was still incredible to see them doing such a fun, energetic and exciting show.

Super Friday night out with @finlay_caswell @bandonthewall Manchester watching @mrgerardlove formerly of one of my favourite bands Teenage Fanclub supporting Boston Legends @buffalotomband 👊🏻 The sound quality of my videos isn’t great as we were right at the front under the speakers, further back where the other 500 or so fans were it was perfect 👌🏻

London’s The Hanging Stars return with their sixth album, Just A Day – a dazzling collection of four-part harmonies, shimmering twelve-string guitars and chiming songs, touching on themes of longing, new beginnings and the fragility of the everyday. Recorded at Edwyn Collin’s legendary Clashnarrow Studios in the Scottish Highlands, the album marks a bold new chapter for the band, produced with the invaluable guidance of Teenage Fanclub’s Gerard Love.
A line-up change at the end of 2024 proved to be a galvanising moment for The Hanging Stars. “We needed to rethink things,” says guitarist Patrick Ralla. “A new leaner approach – bass, drums, guitars, four-part harmonies. Certainly worked for The Byrds, Big Star and Teenage Fanclub.” The result is a wonderfully energising record full of catchy hooks and a renewed vision. The songs are designed to take the listener away from it all… even if it's just for a little while.

Central to the record’s new direction was the involvement of Gerard Love – one third of Teenage Fanclub’s celebrated songwriting trio and the artist behind Lightships. Starting from demos exchanged between Glasgow and London, Love helped the band strip things back to their essence, ever so gently guiding them toward their finest work to date. He also joined the band for a week of recording, contributing vocals, arrangement ideas and by all accounts a mean vegan curry.

Just A Day is The Hanging Stars’ third album to be recorded at Clashnarrow Studios, Helmsdale located in the most idyllic setting imaginable, thirty minutes south of John O’Groats and overlooking the Moray Firth. The studio, owned and run by Edwyn Collins and Grace Maxwell, is a place the band describe with reverence: “a sort of mixture between Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and the BBC’s Repair Shop”.
