The Belfast music community is mourning the loss of Petesy Burns, who passed away peacefully on New Year’s Day. A foundational figure in NI punk, Petesy played in bands including Stalag 17, F.U.A.L. and later The Outcasts, but his impact stretched far beyond music alone.

Through the Warzone Collective and Giro’s, Petesy helped build non-sectarian, DIY spaces during the Troubles, places rooted in solidarity, creativity, vegan food, political discussion and care. As he once put it: “DIY - not UDA/IRA.”

Tributes have poured in from across Belfast and the international punk community. Jake Burns of Stiff Little Fingers wrote: “See when we get past our differences? We’re among the best people in the world. And see Petesy? He was one of the best of us.”

The Outcasts shared: “He was so loved in the punk world - and I mean the world. Everyone who met him loved him, but especially here.”

Fellow Belfast punk legend Terri Hooley said he was “devastated” by the news.

Writer Christopher Owens reflected on Petesy’s wider legacy: “His legacy in NI punk is firmly cemented — but just as importantly was his role in building an alternative way of life in Belfast during severe conflict. Eternal respect.”

Petesy remained principled and active to the end, touring and practising kindness as a radical act. Belfast punk - and Belfast itself - is immeasurably richer for what he gave.

Our thoughts are with Anthea, Oran, Caoimhe, and all who loved him. Rest in power, Petesy.
