Fascinating discussion and a new book to read : congratulations @msellene winning the @kraszna_krausz_foundation prize for the best book on the moving image for her Screen Deep: How Film and TV can solve Racism and Save the World. Thanks to @rhianna.dhillon for the Q&A after Ellen gave the most high energy intro to a film I’ve ever known; Siri’s The Imitation of Life was well worthy of it. She’ll be back with the film as part of the @britishfilminstitute melodrama season on December 2nd. I may go to check out Lana Turner’s artwork (and more wisdom from #ellenejonesfilmcritic

Did Spotify kill the music biopic?

In the age of streaming and social media, big Hollywood music bios like Scott Cooper’s hymn to the Boss feel increasingly old-fashioned, writes @msellene

Have you heard our latest episode yet?

Viewers are so used to seeing death and dying on screen, often in dramatic or unrealistic ways. @msellene & @kermodedodge explore how films and TV are drawn to personifications of death, why we need more realistic depictions and who is making them.

In this clip hear friend-of-the-show Kim Newman @kimnewmanannodracula on various portrayals of the Grim Reaper.

Hear the full programme, which also features Dick Johnson Is Dead director Kirsten Johnson and Death Studies academic Michele Aaron, on BBC Sounds or wherever you get your podcasts.

One of my fave parts of making a film is the privilege of showing it to an audience and hearing what they think of it. You learn so much from listening to what the film made others feel and think about. On Reality Is Not Enough, I realised that beyond Irvine, it’s a film about impermanence, how our time is limited and how what you leave behind is less important than what you get to do and experience with others while you’re here.

Following our World Premiere @edfilmfest we were blessed to have the experience of taking the film on the road for 9 Q&As and very grateful to everyone who came out to see the film in a cinema. I’d also like to thank our brilliant Q&A hosts and the staff at each venue:

"How do you pronounce Van Gogh?"

It's one of many questions raised on this week's Screenshot in which @msellene & @kermodedodge look at the long relationship between cinema and painting.

In addition to @christopherfrayling discussing Hollywood's approach to the history of art you'll hear Timothy Spall on how playing JMW Turner led to a parallel career as a painter, Roger Deakins @team.deakins on the relationship between painting and cinematography and artist @cathylomax on the painterly in cinema - and the cinematic in painting.

Available now on BBC Sounds or wherever you get your podcasts.

And if you have a favourite - or least favourite - depiction of painting on film let us know in the comments.

As American Psycho turns 25, @msellene @kermodedodge start our new series investigating the world of yuppies on screen and ask, are yuppies a thing of the past or more prevalent than ever?

Ellen speaks to director @whitstillman, whose ‘doomed bourgeois in love’ trilogy chronicles the lives of yuppies in the late 80s. Ellen talks to him about his affectionate take on the era and whether his aunt really did invent the phrase ‘yuppie’.

Mark speaks to Mary Harron, director of American Psycho. They discuss the film's surprising legacy and the casting of Christian Bale in his now iconic role as product-obsessed super-yuppie Patrick Bateman.

Ellen then speaks to @konradmkay & @mnadown, co creators of finance-world drama, Industry. They discuss their love of American Psycho and the way in which wealth is portrayed on screen.

🎧 Available now on @bbcsounds or wherever you get podcasts, or 📻 tune in to @bbcradio4 tonight at 7.15pm.

And if you have a favourite on-screen yuppie let us know!
