The “crisis actor” conspiracy isn’t new. It’s over 100 years old.

In 1914, the Rockefellers hired PR man Ivy Lee after the Ludlow coal strike. According to @msidatarbell one of his first moves was claiming the strikers were plants hired by the union.

Amy’s new book Brought to You By traces how corporate PR built the disinformation machine we live in now. Full episode at the link in bio.

Climate vocab word of the week: Network State. A favored ideology among tech billionaires that promotes replacing countries and governments with special economic zones controlled by corporations. Think of it as colonialism for tech bros — their solution to a future transformed by the climate crisis.

Gil Durán has spent the last couple years delving into Network State ideology for his book The Nerd Reich. Amy Westervelt's book Brought to You By delves into the history of all the corporate colonialism that came before as well, and how it's all shaped our information ecosystem and undermined democracy.

Tech billionaires have created a parallel media ecosystem that has surpassed traditional media in influence and given them an enormous amount of control over the world's democracies. The result, propaganda has replaced the press. On this week’s The Spill, Gil Durán, author of the book The Nerd Reich: Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy, in conversation with Amy Westervelt.

Amy Westervelt, long-time climate reporter and founder of the podcast Drilled, conducted a years-long and worldwide investigation into what might be called the Public Relations Industrial Complex (the military insinuation is deliberate and warranted). The just-published result is “Brought to You By: How Corporations Warped the Truth, Conned the Public, and Broke Democracy.”

Yale Climate Connections’ Michael Svoboda spoke with Amy Westervelt last month via Zoom.

Doubt is their product. And now it's an export. 🛢️🌍

The US fossil fuel industry has delayed climate action for decades. Investigative journalist Amy Westervelt @msidatarbell @drilledmedia has traced how the same tactics, messages and personnel now shape the debate in Europe.

In our press briefing, she'll explain how corporate influence campaigns adapt across borders, and what to watch for in your own reporting. A briefing for all colleagues who want to recognise industry playbooks before they set the news agenda.

🌎💚💬 With our lunchtime climate briefings, we are offering journalists a shortcut to high-level experts and to the most important stories to be told. This is the third of five briefings, every Tuesday at 11:55 Berlin time.

BOOK GiVEAWAY 📕🌎🫶🏽

Featuring Amy Westervelt (@msidatarbell ), Founder of @drilledmedia , an investigative journalist who I’ve been a fan of her work for years.

Whether it’s the tobacco industry lying about the health dangers of cigarettes, Big Pharma burying studies that make its products less marketable, or Big Oil misleading the public on the dangers of the climate crisis, we all know corporations use doubt and science denial to avoid responsibility. So why do we continue to let them get away with it?

In Brought to You By, Amy Westervelt exposes the plot hidden within the familiar story of science denial. Over the last century, Big Industry has built a vast apparatus of think tanks, lobbyists, university labs, and obliging news networks to con the public and fool decision-makers, poisoning the informational ecosystem and warping the nature of truth along the way.

How to win? 🏆 📕

Comment why you’d like to read this book and we are only able to do this giveaway in the US. One winner will be selected randomized.

Last Thursday night. New York City. No oil money, or greenwashing panels, or lobbyists, or $400 Bordeaux. Just a room full of incredible people who’ve been arrested, expelled, primaried, or sued for doing the right thing.

Thank you to every single person who came out and so generously donated (especially Justin Pearson, who donated while running his own campaign!). You all showed up for us, so now we can keep showing up for you.

Until the next one!
