“Before you make a painting, you have to know what you’re doing.”
For Michaël Borremans (@michael.borremans ) , every work begins with a concept. Scenes are carefully staged, models photographed, and compositions refined before instinct and chance begin to take over. While the process is meticulous, the meaning is never fixed, leaving each painting open to the viewer.

‘The Performance’ (2004) reflects the tension between careful preparation and intuition that runs through Borremans’ practice. The painting is currently on view at David Zwirner Paris (@davidzwirner), titled ‘French Painting’, which opened in June, marking the artist’s first solo exhibition in France in almost twenty years.

Michaël Borremans (@michael.borremans) approached the studio with the same attention he brings to a painting, considering from the outset how the space would shape the work made within it.

The former workshop in Ghent was transformed with architect Klaas Goris into a studio built around the discipline of painting. A new grid of structural steel girders strengthened the roof, allowing north-facing skylights to fill the vast space with soft, even light, while an oak-lined library was suspended above as a place to read, think and step away from the canvas. Every decision was made in service of the work. “A studio is just a tool,” Borremans says. “It has no impact whatsoever on my inspiration.”

Apollo opened in April 2017 with a simple but radical idea — a meeting place around art, where people from fashion, music, design, and crafts could come together by chance and proximity. A place that maybe wasn’t excluding. Or maybe it was. But if you wanted to, you could join in.
We called it a bumblebee. It shouldn’t have flown. But it did — carried by desire, energy, and a fair dose of creative chaos, it hit on something Copenhagen was missing.
Over almost 10 years, we danced on the granite bar, filled the courtyard like an Italian piazza, and made some of the wildest, most beautiful food and memories of our lives. We threw parties that went too far and cleaned up broken glass in the morning with no regrets. We welcomed artists, chefs, students, lovers, night owls, and natural wine drinkers. We grew, changed, and found our voice — one that was global and yet local. Unpretentious but special.
It has been an honour and a privilege to have had so many beautiful memories here ! Love to everyone who made it special.

Apollo will close its doors at the end of September. 🖤

In 1971, Halldor Gunnløgsson designed a second version of his own home for an elevated site on the north coast of Zealand.

"Double take. The house that Halldor Gunnløgsson built – twice" explores the story of how he replicated an icon of Danish Modernism.
