Norwegian artist Morten Slettemeås presented VEKE at The Armory Show 2026.

Presented by @johsgallery, the work brought together a new painting composed by seven panels rooted in the landscape of Gvarv, Telemark. The panels quietly refer to the seven days of the week ✨

Celebrating Nordic art at The Armory Show 💫

This weekend the Consulate General of Denmark in New York, the Norwegian Consulate General and JOHS Gallery came together to celebrate Nordic artists Mie Olise Kjærgaard and Morten Slettemeås participation in The Armory Show 2026.

A cornerstone of New York’s cultural landscape since 1994, the Armory Show brings leading international galleries and contemporary and modern art to the Javits Center each year, marking the beginning of New York’s fall art season. Mie and Morten’s large-scale paintings bring together distinct perspectives, stories, and artistic expressions from Denmark and Norway.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening celebrating Nordic art and creativity in New York.

I also thought this monumental series by @mslettemeas at the @johsgallery booth was not just impressive in scale but in composition.

A series of seven paintings, one for each day of the week, is composed as a hero’s journey.

A continuous landscape in changing colours, for the shifts in time of day, and in the landscape’s detail - which you can see here primarily in the 3 central canvases where rocks and earth give way to blue mirage.

I love that exquisite quality of light which current Nordic painters excel at and which transport you to crystalline summer days and glittering water bodies.

They remind me of the Venetian masters and how much the interaction of light and water impacted their work and differentiated them from Florentine artists of the same period.

The light in places has always been vastly influential on artists’ style and technique.

I also liked the way the hero - who appears in the first and last paintings - disappears into the landscape, in the manner of Chinese miniature painting where figures in landscapes were depicted as small and humble within the eternal beauty and wisdom of nature, unlike the wild hubris of their contemporaries in European, whose figures tended to dominate.

Celebrating the opening of The Armory Show in NYC, we’re excited to share our participation in developing the booth layout for JOHS Gallery, presenting VEKE, a solo presentation by Norwegian artist Morten Slettemeås.

The presentation consists of a single painting constructed from seven panels, conceived specifically for the space.

Following a flood of gallery openings in Tribeca and Chelsea at the start of the month, the fall art season in New York is officially in full swing with the opening of the annual @TheArmoryShow at the Javits Center on Thursday, running through the weekend, marking its sixth edition on the far West side of Manhattan.
