Au revoir Paris & goodbye “Vertical Road”

Feeling full of gratitude, cheese, and wine after this tour. Thank you to Théâtre des Champs-Élysées & @prodsarfati for having us back to Paris.

As for “Vertical Road”, it’s been a long and fulfilling journey. I’ve definitely grown as an artist through this piece. After 16 shows across Boston, NYC, in Paris and all the many run throughs and techs, I can now put it to rest…. for now. Thank you so much to the team and for the trust that Akram has in me! To my warriors and colleagues, I love you guys! You are the heart of the piece! So long “Traveller”(Trevor)

Wings of Wax by Jiri Kylian 🪽
In 2009, I had the pleasure to work with him Jiri himself in Oslo. The new Opera House gave an entire program for him to curate. It was a phenomenal month, and my introduction to his art. In this video I am at Boston Ballet next to Principal Dancer @msliac

Our #WCW? Principal Dancer Lia Cirio, who is taking the stage for three in Akram Khan’s Vertical Road (Reimagined) 2023 🧑‍🧑‍🧒

"Vertical Road, for me, has always been a piece about the journey and one that tests you. Akram Khan’s choreography and dramaturgy require your full body and soul. It pushes you past your threshold, and if you trust it, it takes you to unforgettable moments, both on and off stage.

Being able to embark on this journey now, as a mother-to-be with two lives inside me, has become such a gift.

The layers of meaning within Vertical Road are vast. I have grown in so many different ways since the last time we danced it, and my personal story within the piece has evolved. Because of this and because of the precious lives I carry, being able to share my own meaning on stage with the people watching feels quite remarkable.

I can’t wait for the day Paul and I get to share a video of Vertical Road with our twins in person… our whole family on stage together. Our little warriors 🥰💪🏽💪🏽" -Lia Cirio

It has been two and a half years since I took my final bow with Boston Ballet. Since then, life has unfolded in ways I could never have imagined fuller, more meaningful, and more deeply connected to purpose. I am profoundly grateful.

To Akram, thank you for your trust in allowing us to carry, protect, and guide your work to another generation of artists. And to Mavin, thank you for the depth, care, and layers you continue to reveal always bringing me back to those enduring questions of transcendence, humanity, and what exists beyond the movement. Your imprint is forever alive!

Returning to Boston Ballet, a home I once knew from the inside out, but this time standing on the other side of the room, has forever changed my perspective on how art can be experienced, shared, and passed forward.

And Anjuli, my serene stager, mentor, and friend. You were the person who first opened the door to Vertical Road for me. You guided me as an artist when I danced the work, stood beside me through my first staging of it in Dresden, and now, to return together to the place where my journey with this work began feels profoundly full circle. Thank you for your kindness, care, confidence, humor, and the extraordinary generosity with which you stage. Your impact on me is something I will always carry and something I hope to pass on to every artist I encounter through Akram’s work.

This chapter arrived during one of the fullest seasons of my life: teaching my dear students at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, staging Vertical Road for Boston Ballet, building Season Two of Lam Dance Works, remounting a Ken Ossola solo and, above all, being Dada to my kids. A very full plate, but one filled with tremendous gratitude.

To the OGs and the new generation of Boston Ballet dancers: thank you for your trust, your openness, your willingness to dig deeper, question more, and allow yourselves to be guided. I am boiling over with love and pride for all of you.

As you carry Vertical Road onward to New York and Paris, know that a piece of me travels with you.

Art moves through us. We carry it, we transform it, and then we give it forward.

Until next time… ❤️

Opening night of @bostonballet’s season. Very excited to revisit @akramkhancompany’s “Vertical Road”. This work has a special place in my heart. The meaning of the piece never lands since it’s so layered, but I know what it means to me. With the state of the world and now being a father this piece holds so much emotion and meaning. I hope you take away from it as much as the cast gives to the work.

Thank you to my amazing wife @anjhuds & my friend @johndilam for guiding us through the process.

Hope to see you at the shows. Catch me every show: Sept. 10 - 13 & 17 - 20

With our AGMA contract, the calling stage manager for a world premiere gets listed with casting! ✨ While this wasn’t technically a world premiere, the scenic & lighting design was brand new, so I was able to be credited too 🥺
