Ahead of the Alumni Wind Ensemble’s American Semiquincentennial Concert, we sat down with Director Dr. Mark Carlson, D.M.A., for a quick look at what’s on the program ➡️ The concert marks America’s 250th anniversary with a program built entirely around American composers — opening with Helen May Butler’s “Cosmopolitan America,” a march with as much political and social history behind it as musical. From there it moves through the jazz idioms in Ben Horne’s treatment of the spiritual “Deep River,” to selections from Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” tracing the sound of Puerto Rican and Caribbean music brought to the Broadway stage. 📅 Sunday, Sept. 27 📍 Knott Auditorium ⏰ 2:00 PM 🎟️ Free & open to everyone! “A celebration of Mount St. Mary’s University’s wind ensemble legacy, which is our graduates who continue to share music with people.” 🎶 — Dr. Mark Carlson #AlumniWindEnsemble #Semiquincentennial #mountstmarysu Ahead of the Alumni Wind Ensemble’s American Semiquincentennial Concert, we sat down with Director Dr. Mark Carlson, D.M.A., for a quick look at what’s on the program ➡️ The concert marks America’s 250th anniversary with a program built entirely around American composers — opening with Helen May Butler’s “Cosmopolitan America,” a march with as much political and social history behind it as musical. Please join us in congratulating Efosa Omorogbe C’24 on her acceptance and decision to attend University of Illinois College of Medicine! While at the Mount, Efosa majored in biology with minors in French and chemistry. She made a lasting impact on campus through her extensive involvement, serving as the founder of the Peer Mentorship Program, Resident Assistant, an SGA representative, CORE Leader, and President of the Health Professions Club. Efosa was also an active member of Best Buddies, a Maguire Scholar, and dedicated her time as both a Peer Tutor and Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader. Here’s a bit from her: “The Mount will always hold a special place in my heart. Since freshman year, I have felt supported by both professors and students within the COAD science department. Professors truly take pride in mentoring students and providing 1:1 support whenever needed. The Mount has prepared me to enter medical school by challenging me academically while also exposing me to opportunities that pushed me to grow both inside and outside of the classroom. Most importantly, it taught me the value of community, perseverance, and pouring into others the same way others once poured into me.” Congratulations Efosa 👏🎉
