Celebrated 1 year of marriage with my forever boo thang. 🥰💍 After year one, my advice: Keep God first. Marriage isn’t hard. It’s hard WORK and your spouse should be worth it. MINE IS!! 💅🏽 Embrace the work. Appreciate what you have. Become your own #CoupleGoals. And don’t wait for the people around you to be comfortable with you bragging on your partner. BRAG ANYWAY. ❤️ I’m praying we’re still this crazy about each other in year 20. 🙌🏾

One year down 🤎 💍 A year ago today, there was no planner buzzing about, ensuring everyone was ready to take their places. There was no cake decorator calling to let us know they were stuck in traffic or that some catastrophe had occurred with the top tier. There were no arguments about who truly deserved to be the best man or the maid of honor. In all of the things that were not a part of this day, there were simply two people who decided they wanted to take their two families and merge them into one according to God’s design. And since that day, those two people have been doing the work to reflect in the natural what was committed spiritually. You hear people say, “The first year is the hardest year,” and I’m not here to debate whether or not that’s true, considering this is only year one. 😂 But what I can say is that I’ve come to realize that marriage is not hard but there is hard work involved in a marriage. 😮‍💨 There is the hard work of waking up every day and setting aside the parts of yourself that have kept you comfortable and safe. Retiring the parts that have taught you to be guarded or selfish, while holding tightly to the parts that make you who you are, the parts God intends to remain a part of this marriage. This is also why I believe who stands beside you when you make those vows is incredibly important. Because when the aesthetic of the perfectly positioned wedding party fades into the background of your very real life, you are going to need people around you who respect what you have committed to, understand the work involved in protecting it, and provide wise counsel as you navigate every high and low. I could go on and on about what our first year has looked like, but to keep it brief, I’ll simply say this: I could not imagine being the woman and the wife I am today without having gone through year one with this man. Thank you for the depths in which you love me, and thank you for the ways you have allowed me to love you. Happy Anniversary babe. I look forward to all the years ahead. 🫶🏽🙏🏽 📸: @rgspark

Someone said, “y’all are goals.” And I had to stop them. No… we are work. Beautiful work. Worth it work. But still… work. I have to work to communicate. Yeah. Me. 🥴 Work to have hard conversations and hold myself accountable. 🫣 Work to be part of a blended family that isn’t always peaceful. Work to stay a soft place for him to land when everything in me wants to go back to the version of myself that fought everything and everyone. I have to work to remember my way isn’t the only way… and that there is a peace I find in his leadership when I allow myself to rest there. 🎀 And he works too… 🥰 but that’s not my story to tell. What I can say is this only works because we both choose to do the work. ⛏️ Not just daily… moment by moment. ⏰ Praying. 🙏🏽 Pausing. 🟰 Checking ourselves. 🪞 Making space to connect… even when life is loud. The story before this picture was interrupted by the unhealed emotions of others. The story after this picture will continue to be one written with love and intention I swore to my husband & his children before God. Moments like this remind me that children deserve adults who can set their feelings aside long enough to keep the focus where it belongs. On them. The right partner doesn’t just love you, they expand what you know. 🧠 Today is the last day of Black History Month (but black history is 365 round these parts ✊🏽), and my church reminded me of yet another reason I’m grateful for my husband. I thought I was pretty educated on Black history. Then I married Marcus and realized… baby, there were chapters missing. 🇭🇹 Loving a Haitian man taught me about more than delicious cuisine, it taught me what textbooks didn’t! How Haiti helped reshape the global fight for freedom and challenged the world’s idea of what liberation could be. Listen… the right relationship won’t just change your last name. It’ll expand your mind. Love will expand your heart. I’ve never really been the girl to harp on Valentine’s Day. Truth be told, I’ve never been one to harp on any “holiday.” There was always some reason it was “no big deal.” But loving this man has shown me something different. Even though he finds random Tuesdays to celebrate me in the sweetest ways… even though he has created a life where I sometimes gasp at how hard I once worked just to survive before him… he still jumps at every chance to create moments for us to share. And that means everything. Thank you to my husband for showing up for me in ways my heart desired, but my mouth was once too prideful to speak. ❤️ My safest place. Today was my first time serving on a choir again in over a decade. 🫢 Not because I didn’t love God. But because I was deeply hurt in church. And today, sitting under a message about building on a solid foundation, I had to swallow a hard truth. 😔 Sometimes that collapse from the hurt is not only about what was done to us. Sometimes it is also about what we built our faith on. Not to excuse the harm. But to grow from it. 🌱 God has been intentional in this season. Just like I fell in love with him, we vowed our lives to each other the same way. Quietly.
