ROWING DEMYSTIFIED EP 7:

One-oar scull, the most technically complex boat manuever covered to date. Originally used (and perhaps only known by) sailors rowing a dingy, this technique allows you to move the boat sideways (yes, really). Useful in so many applications - mastering it may very well take you to new levels of lore and mystique within your local rowing community.
Any questions, just ask. Will drop more resources in the comments #rowing #rowinglife #rowingrelated #rowingmotivation #sculling

A few notes on this video:

The reason we back with the bottom edge of the blades facing skyward is because it allows you to come out of backing by flipping the oars forward back into the water. Backing with the oars turned on the “regular” square, as you would row, offers no such smooth transition out of a backing stroke with speed.

Over time, using the full legs and back while backing makes you incredibly comfortable going reverse in a scull. In my experience, rowers who only back exclusively with their arms never achieve that “full” comfort going in reverse.

Committing to flipping the oars fully when coming out of your backing strokes is of paramount importance. As with most sculling techniques, not committing fully to the technique can create problems.

Lastly, let the boat ride when you flip those blades over, and don’t panic. Push/pull is a great drill to get more comfortable in this final position - and the innovative @aramtraining has a great video on how to perform this drill most effectively.

And lastly, thank you, Leila, for filming a stranger’s video as he asked you to pan back and forth when you already had the perfect shot.

I hope this helps you look cool 😎. #rowing #sculling #rowingtricks #rowinglife #aviron
