What a year! It’s hard to “measure” something like community, because its impact can show up quietly in sooo many aspects of our lives.

But just for fun, here’s this year in numbers: 48 events hosted, 375+ neighbors welcomed, 14 partner spaces, 70+ books swapped, 12 creative workshops, 6 holidays celebrated… and one really wonderful year together in Hell’s Kitchen.

Huge love to all the neighbors, partners, and projects who made space for us this year @kristineuhh @enochs.nyc @deaconbrodies @neighbor.nyc and many more tagged — you made room for so many beautiful moments!

People say “everyone wants a village, but no one wants to be a villager,” but we’ve all proven that wrong this year. Thank you for showing up, bringing snacks, opening your homes, and being the best villagers ever! I can’t wait to see what we build together next year! 🫂💚

Wrapping up our time with Muri Marinho!
@muriri2

During their residency at Hillhaus, Muri led workshops for participants of all ages, introduced us to the joy and magic of Forró dance, and hosted an artist weekend open to the public, featuring a 30-minute solo performance!

We’re so proud of everything they accomplished during their 3-week residency, and we can’t wait to see where their next journey and upcoming project take them!

Project Showcase | Muri Marinho

At the end of Muri Marinho’s art residency, they hosted an immersive artist weekend at Hillhaus, featuring a dynamic schedule of events that included live performances, a Forró workshop, film screenings, and a drawing workshop. During their 30-minute performance, Muri pushed the boundaries of traditional performance art, guiding participants through various spaces, both physically and emotionally, while exploring themes of self-identity, gender, and the power of spontaneous expression.

In addition to the performance, Muri maximized their time at Hillhaus by facilitating three self-portrait workshops and three Forró dance workshops, both in-house and open to the public. We are excited to see how Muri’s journey and work continue to evolve!

Here are some highlights from their Performance!

My time here @hillhaus.art was so special! Tucked away on a quiet mountain, the cozy studio, home-grown organic meals (shoutout to the founding sisters!), and calm vibe made focusing a breeze.

Finished my series’ opening piece, bonded with artists worldwide over meals/tango/painting therapy, and dived into deep talks—weddings, women’s health, culture… it all fed my creativity.

For artists: peace to create + cross-cultural inspiration + balanced living/work spaces. Hillhaus isn’t just a residency—it’s where my work found new meaning. ✨

To All Artists: Hillhaus Residency Is a Must-Try!

Learning to play, to let go, to see yourself differently—that’s the kind of serious work we’re into. 💛

We started by drawing spontaneous lines and turning them into creatures—an exercise in loosening up and embracing creative freedom. From there, we let go of realism and reimagined ourselves however we wanted, using mirrors, memory, and our spontaneity to guide us.

Muri also shared some of their research on the science of play and why making room for spontaneity and creativity matters so much for our well-being.

Huge thanks to our wonderful instructor Muri for leading such a thoughtful, well-planned workshop—and to everyone who showed up with curiosity and courage.

Meet MURI MARINHO — a Brazilian art-educator and performance artist based in Boston, USA. They’ve been interested in the potential of art for self-improvement but pushing back on individualist lenses. Muri wants to be an educator that works through healing and brings a community together. Muri has been teaching drawing and self-reflection courses since 2020, including in Brazil, USA, and Japan to all ages.

At Hillhaus, Muri will develop a curriculum of workshops on contemporary dance through politically-informed lenses — focusing on joy, play, and pleasure, also making use of nature around Hillhaus. They’ll explore how improvisation, drawing, and movement can connect people with themselves and with each other. This will also serve as a preparation period for a performance/teaching opportunity in Boston next spring.
