$🧿 ⭐️ It’s release day for the first single on the new @girlsintroublemusic album! WASTE NOT WANT NOT is now streaming on all platforms. Give it a listen, let us know what you think, and follow @girlsintroublemusic wherever you listen to music so that you’ll get an alert each month when the new songs drop. (Our fourth album, RED THREAD, comes out 2/12/27, with one single a month from it till then.) 🪬 Behind the music: I call this an “indie folk mom-core” song; it’s about Penina, from the Book of Samuel, who is often seen as a cruel sister-wife to Hannah. And maybe she is; Penina has a lot of children and seems to tease Hannah, who struggles to conceive. But last year I taught a class for @judaismunbound and one of the (adult) students forever changed how I see Penina. This student was a mom of young kids and she suggested that maybe Penina wasn’t a bad person; maybe she was dealing with post partum depression, and/or overwhelmed with caretaking responsibilities. Whoa. Plus, it’s clear from the text that their shared husband loves Hannah a LOT - maybe even prefers her. So this is a song written in Penina’s voice, with compassion for the difficulties of her life. At the end of the song, Penina turns to Hannah and suggests they both free themselves from the constraints of the world they’re living in. 🎶 So grateful to my collaborators on this song: @aaronmhartman7 on bass and kid-wrangling; @therachelbrashear on elecric guitar (love the solos on this song so much); @jitanzer drumming up a storm; @justinphelpsrecording engineering and mixing; @timothy_stollenwerk mastering. Special thanks to @musicoregon Echo Fund for invaluable support which allowed us to record at @hallowedhalls. 🙏 I couldn’t do what I do without the support of people like YOU who listen toy music, share it with friends, and (for those who can) donate to either my @fracturedatlas fiscal sponsorship account (for nonprofit donations) or directly to me. THANK YOU THANK YOU to everyone who has made this album possible. I’m really proud of it. Welcome to the Girls in Trouble song cycle, Penina!!! Next month: Dinah! 💫$
