Kappela (directed by Muhammad Musthafa) is a brilliant, slow-burn thriller disguised as a sweet, rural romance. The movie is a masterclass in challenging the audience's biases and structural preconceptions about human character. The story begins in a picturesque, rural village in Wayanad. Jessy (Anna Ben) is an innocent, ordinary young woman from a traditional family. By pure chance, she dials a wrong number while trying to call a boutique. The number belongs to Vishnu (Roshan Mathew), an auto-driver in Kozhikode. Over a series of phone calls, a sweet, long-distance relationship blossoms between them without them ever meeting in person. To the audience, Vishnu comes across as an absolute gentleman—polite, supportive, soft-spoken, and deeply caring.
