Mama Joy
7.5 yr old(estimated)
Franklin, TN

Symptoms: swollen lymph nodes in her neck, could not breathe out of her nose and barely out of her mouth due to the swollen lymph nodes, she would bleed from her nose, lethargy, loss of appetite, blasto ate away at the roof of her mouth, she had hyper-keratosis.

Blastomycosis diagnosis was confirmed by MiraVista on 7/18/23.

I fostered/adopted Joy after she had been neglected & left outside majority of her life and left at a shelter in Alabama, on death row. She had a huge cancerous tumor on her when I started fostering her and after everything we went through I couldn’t let her go.

Her Blasto case was very different than most. Her infection never traveled into her lungs. It was concentrated to her nose. She was initially taken care of at one ER vet/internal medicine and I felt like they weren’t knowledgeable about how to treat her. They were treating her as if she was destined to die. We moved to Nashville Veterinary Specialists and am so thankful for them because they said “we not only want her to survive, we want her to thrive!” She was in really bad shape when we went to NVS. She wouldn’t stop bleeding from her nose & wasn’t sleeping (she was falling asleep standing up, then collapsing), she could barely breathe, & wasn’t eating anything! They kept her for 4 or 5 days, it was a blur really. They started her on Amphotericin B infusions with the itraconazole. After those initial days of infusions she had to take a break because of her kidneys. After that break she had to go back a few times a week until the vet said we didn’t have to anymore. We stayed on itra until December when we got a zero on the test!!!
My vet said we didn’t need to continue with the meds. I had her tested again in April and had a second zero!!

Now we are just battling/monitoring her skin cancer.

She is the epitome of her name, even with all of the abuse, she loves everyone and shines Joy from within.
