![@rally.rally.rally teamed up with @acoldwall for the year’s “A Place To Gather” festival concept. 💡
As its first visual art and design commission of 2026, the pair enlisted architectural studios @unit38_ and @mwa.info to create an immersive space on the grounds titled “Secret Liaison.” Serving as a temporary landmark for Southwark Park, it’s designed to transform as natural light changes, where people can rest and find shade during the day and engage with the community at night.
The structure, nestled among the tress around the park’s bandstand, is built to function off-grid and features bespoke 3m-long light fittings which emit the same colour used to illuminate public spaces like car parks, motorways and streets. “[It’s] a very specific sodium orange glow, drowning out all other colours,” MW-A’s Maximillian Worrell and Jamie Hignett of Unit 38, tell Hypebeast. “They’re programmed to emulate decommissioned sodium street lamps as they turn on at sunset and glow brighter as it darkens.”
These are then suspended in the centre of custom-made fabric that moves with wind and allows light in only one direction to create a dynamic space. “Rather than a circular glow, it stretches light, depending on the weave. On two planes, the fabric is pulled taut. Between these, one piece is hung from either end, animating the lights through a connection with the environment.”
At the heart of both studios’ ethos is architecture’s relationship with community and civic life, and circularity is an important part of their work. “A festival is a microcosm of the atmosphere we create for community spaces. When working in these settings, we always think about the material life cycle after the event,” Hignett explains. “The CLT benches will find a new permanent home in a community centre, and the lights and fabric will be repurposed to form permanent fittings at Unit 38’s social centre in Bethnal Green.”

![Announcing RALLY’s first visual art & design commission of 2026. The work entitled ‘Secret Liaison’ is a collaboration between MW-A [@mwa.info] and Unit 38 [@unit38_] developed in response to the RALLY x A-COLD-WALL* [@acoldwall] open call in collaboration with Francesca Gavin [@roughversion], #APlaceToGather.
Secret Liaison is a temporary landmark for Southwark Park, a place to rest in the shade by day and find community by night. Fabric is pulled taut in one plane and allowed to hang loose in the other, creating a shifting surface that billows, shimmers and catches light as people move through it. At night, light transforms the structure into a subtle point of orientation in the park.
The installation is open and adaptable, offering space to pause, meet, converse and gather. Its temporary construction reflects the nature of gathering itself: fluid, collective and shaped by those who occupy it.
The fabric is a custom-made polarising textile, allowing light to pass through in only one direction. By night, lights placed inside will be stretched and filtered by the polarising fabric, each angle of approach creating a different experience.
The lights are bespoke 3 metre long fittings fabricated and programmed by Unit 38 to function off-grid. Timber seating is created with repurposed cross-laminated timber from Tipping Point East. Following #RALLY2026 it will go on to find a new home and purpose.
Materials are held together for the weekend before being returned to the circular economy, leaving behind a temporary intervention rather than a permanent object.
