IPSC Nationals!

This was a weak hand only stage... historically, my weak hand only stages are rough.

I was worried of this, especially with the bobber plate, and stage planned to leave it after a certain amount of time.

This stage also called for 12 minimum shots to score, and you only get 15+1 in the chamber. I was fully expecting to have to reload, which would cost a ton more time.

All in all, it was successful for me.

It was great to run with the @howitzerclothing squad at IPSC. They were friendly, supportive, and helped reset consistently. It was a great time with a great group... would be happy to run with them again.

IPSC Nationals is done.

Huge shoutout to @eric.howitzerclothing and the @howitzerclothing squad. Nothing beats shooting alongside a group of savages who bring energy and support to the range.

A few takeaways from the match:

- The 3/2/1 Format: Appreciate the consistency of this setup match to match.

- Optics vs. Prod Optics: The division split is way more interesting to me than Carry Optics vs. Limited Optics. In USPSA, the difference is single-action, gas pedals, and magwells while everyone runs 24-round mags. IPSC Prod Optics capacity at 15 rounds changes the game.

- Stage Planning & Risk: That 15-round cap forces you to manage risk and calculate carefully. You have to decide whether to push a 14-round string clean or weigh the risk of going dry.

- Walkthroughs & Mental Load: The 3-minute walkthrough (and no day before walk through) rule eliminates the USPSA style memory stages where it’s more about memorization than shooting. Less mental clutter during prep means more focus and pressure on executing fundamentals. (Credit to @theuspsa Nats this year though—outside a couple stages, Race and Factory Nats were incredible).

- Standardization: Big fan of IPSC keeping gear, start positions, and trigger weights strict... right up until individual RO subjectivity kicks in and gets silly.

- White Targets: Scoring the back side of the target is pure genius. Scoring is easier and it eliminates the mess of matching five different shades of brown pasters.

Massive thanks to @greater_pittsburgh_gun_club for hosting an incredible match—even with movers on every stage. Can’t wait for next year!

IPSC Nationals 2026.

These IPSC matches are always super fun for me. I dig the simplicity and the standardization of rules. I find that because stages aren’t overly complex more attention can be put on the shooting piece instead of memorizing a crazy stage plan.

One of the things I always look for in a good match is intentionality behind stages. Often times poor stages can feel random and lackluster or without a clear objective.

An example I use often is the comparison to CrossFit. Agree with their definition of “Fitness” or not, they are very clear in the disciplines to be tested, especially at the highest level. How that gets tested varies constantly, but done correctly, the workouts should be focused and with clear objectives.

So first things first…. How would you define “good shooting”? What characteristics would make a “good shooter”?
